Thesis Work – Robotics for Digital Inspections in the Nuclear Power Industry

At Vattenfall R&D, we explore how robotics and digital technologies can make inspections of energy facilities safer, more efficient, and more data-driven. Within Digital Inspections, we investigate the use of autonomous robots, drones, sensor technology, and data analytics in industrial environments.

We are now looking for a Master's thesis student to contribute to the development and evaluation of robot-based inspection solutions. The thesis topic will be defined together based on your interests, background, and our ongoing research needs.

Possible areas of focus include:

• Robot-based inspection methods
• Autonomous navigation in industrial environments
• Sensor integration and data collection
• 3D mapping and localization
• Computer vision and anomaly detection
• AI and machine learning for inspection data analysis
• Automated inspection routines
• Development of software, algorithms, or robotic prototypes
• Practical testing and evaluation using robotic platforms

The project will have a strong practical focus and may involve programming, algorithm development, testing, data collection, and validation using real robotic systems. Alternative thesis topics within digital inspections and robotics can also be discussed.

Scope: 30 ECTS credits

Qualifications

We are looking for a student who are about to complete their academic studies and are eager to apply their knowledge in a real-world setting through a thesis project at Vattenfall. You are someone who shares our values and identifies with our principles: Active, Open, Positive and Safety.

• Master's student in Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering Physics, or similar.
• Strong interest in robotics and autonomous systems.
• Programming skills in Python and/or C++.
• Knowledge of AI, sensors, navigation, or computer vision.
• Able to combine theoretical knowledge with practical development.
• Self-driven with strong collaboration and problem-solving skills.
• Experience with ROS/ROS2, SLAM, simulation, or robotic platforms is considered a plus.
