Title: Master Thesis Student Total cost of ownership, a case study comparison of classic drivetrain, electrified drivetrain and e-fuel drivetrain vehicles
The research and development divisions of Scania, Man and International have merged into a common research and development organisation under the name Traton.
Traton's control system development is an important part of meeting our ambitious sustainability goals with an ecosystem of sustainable transport. Among other things, a uniform diagnostics and component design for the desired vehicle life length is important and a part of Traton being a world leader.
Our sections are responsible for drive train control system pre-development. Parts of the vehicle design with a major impact on the environmental impact and greenhouse gas footprint.
We are a strong multi-cultural team with different backgrounds and experience, where a devotion for technical development and requirements balancing are the common denominator. Together we normally supervise 10-30 theses students a year and we regularly get the feedback that our way of working is characterized by an inclusive, positive and helpful attitude.

Thesis assignment:
As for all theses the work will be divided in four phases. Starting with the tentative research question an iterative information survey will take place during the first weeks ending with a more or less finalized introduction, motivation, research question, literature survey and method choice as well as a time plan. This thesis will, as far as we judge, have a more extensive literature survey part stretching into the main work phase that follows. The following eight to twelve weeks consists of the main thesis work, divided in two parts and split by a mid-term seminar feedback option. Finally it's time to write up the thesis and present it orally both at Scania and the grading university.
The research of this thesis is a case study on the total cost of ownership, comparing the classic drivetrain (fossil fuelled internal combustion engine) to the evolving electrified drivetrain and the alternative e-fuel fuelled internal combustion engine drivetrain. An initial focus will be on finding relevant information, contact suppliers/producers as well as company internal information sources, and compile data for the continued study. The data will be evaluated to some extent in Matlab but this thesis will also require Excell and Python to be used for compiling and comparing.

We are looking for someone who is an imaginative, communicative, initiative-taking and structured problem solver who sees opportunities. You have a positive attitude, find it easy to make new contacts and appreciate working both in a team and on your own.

As documentation is available in multiple languages proficient in Swedish and English in speech and writing is required, the knowledge of German is considered an advantage.

- Educated in engineering economics and energy sciences.
- With an understanding of and an interest in the cost optimization and trade-offs that ultimately shapes the path of technical development.
- Having an interest in the economic part of engineering and personal traits enabling smooth producer and supplier contacts.
- Fundamentally knowledgeable of Matlab and highly knowledgeable on Excell and Python.
- A Master student with a major in engineering economics, energy sciences or environmental engineering (energy focus) or similar.
