At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility, we offer our diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, more than 80 000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.

We are now looking for a Software Application Engineer to join our Trackside Signalling team in Stockholm.

Your future role

This is an opportunity to work with safety-critical systems, solve complex technical challenges, and develop expertise in one of the most specialized and future-proof engineering fields in the railway industry.

As a Software Application Engineer, you will help configure, develop and adapt railway signalling applications that control train movements and ensure safe railway operations. Working closely with experienced engineers, you will translate system requirements into software applications, support testing and validation activities, and contribute to solutions that directly impact railway safety and performance.

Your work will be an essential part of bringing signalling systems from concept to operation.

You'll join a collaborative engineering team combining experienced signalling specialists and early-career engineers.

Knowledge sharing is an important part of everyday work, and you'll be supported by colleagues who are passionate about technology, continuous improvement and developing the next generation of signalling experts.

We'll look to you for:
  • Analyze and understand signalling system requirements.
  • Develop and configure software applications for railway signalling systems.
  • Create technical documentation and application design deliverables.
  • Define technical solutions in accordance with railway rules, standards and regulations.
  • Participate in verification, testing and validation activities.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and support problem resolution.
  • Contribute to continuous improvements in tools, methods and engineering practices.
  • Collaborate with system engineers, testers and project teams across the organization.

Few engineering disciplines combine software, systems thinking and safety-critical technology quite like railway signalling.

This role gives you the opportunity to:
  • Work on systems that directly impact railway safety and operations.
  • Learn from experienced signalling specialists.
  • Build expertise in a niche field with strong long-term demand.
  • Contribute to rail projects in Sweden and internationally.
  • Develop into future specialist, system engineering or technical leadership roles.
  • Work with technology that supports sustainable transportation and greener mobility.

All about you

We're looking for someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and wants to work with systems where safety, reliability and quality are critical.
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience working with technical systems, software applications or system engineering.
  • Experience working with requirements, specifications and technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, operating systems, networking or software environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Fluent English, both written and spoken.
  • Swedish is not required from day one. However, due to the nature of our projects, customers and documentation, you should have a basic understanding of Swedish or be motivated to develop your Swedish language skills toward professional working proficiency.
  • Analytical and detail-oriented.
  • Comfortable working with complex technical systems.
  • Structured and methodical in your approach.

It would be an advantage if you have:
  • Experience from railway signalling.
  • Experience from safety-critical industries such as rail, aerospace, defence, industrial automation or telecommunications.
  • Experience working according to safety standards such as CENELEC (EN50126, EN50128, EN50129) or similar frameworks.
  • Knowledge of systems integration, verification or validation activities.

Things you'll enjoy

Join us on a life-long transformative journey - the rail industry is here to stay, so you can grow and develop new skills and experiences throughout your career. You'll also:
  • Enjoy stability, challenges and a long-term career free from boring daily routines
  • Collaborate with transverse teams and helpful colleagues
  • Contribute to innovative projects
  • Utilise our hybrid working environment
  • Benefit from our investment in your development, through award-winning learning
  • Benefit from a fair and dynamic reward package that recognises your performance and potential, plus comprehensive and competitive social coverage (life, medical, pension)

You don't need to be a train enthusiast to thrive with us. We guarantee that when you step onto one of our trains with your friends or family, you'll be proud. If you're up for the challenge, we'd love to hear from you!
