Beskrivning

Blekinge Institute of Technology is a place of curiosity and ingenuity with a campus in the middle of the Blekinge archipelago. Here we offer education from undergraduate to doctoral level and conduct world-class applied research. We change and make a difference. Do you want to become one of us?

Work description

The PhD positions are part of the research portfolio within Mechanical Engineering and Product Development, where multiple externally funded research projects are conducted in parallel in close collaboration with industry, public authorities, and international partners. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development the research, including engaging in ongoing and future research projects, where research questions, empirical studies, and method development are shaped by real-world challenges arising across different application domains.

The research focuses on strengthening product/production development processes, and decision-making in complex engineering systems through a model-driven approach, i.e. a combination of simulation- and data-driven methods and tools with data analysis and machine learning as an important part. The work builds on established theories and methods while advancing their development through applied research, experimentation, and cross-project synthesis. A particular emphasis is placed on developing transferable knowledge, methods, and tools that can be applied across multiple contexts, including civil, industrial, and defense-related (dual-use) applications.

The PhD candidate's tasks include conducting research, collecting and analysing data from multiple project contexts, developing and evaluating methods and tools, writing scientific publications, and disseminating results in academic, industrial, and societal forums. The position involves close collaboration with researchers, doctoral candidates, and non-academic partners, and requires the ability to balance depth in specific studies with breadth across the research portfolio.

Rules and benefits for Ph.D. students in Sweden apply to this position. The Ph.D. student will develop an individual study plan in mechanical engineering together with supervisors. The position may include up to 20% of other services, e.g., teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The research environment

The research will be conducted within the subject of mechanical engineering and the Product Development Research Lab. PDRL is an internationally recognised research environment focusing on engineering product development, innovation capability, and advanced engineering design, with strong links to industry and societal challenges.

The research environment is characterised by interdisciplinary collaboration, applied research projects, and access to advanced development, simulation, and visualisation infrastructures. Research is carried out in collaboration with national and international partners from industry, public authorities, and academia. Examples of application areas of currently ongoing research projects are automotive (sheet metal forming), construction equipment, and manufacturing systems (digital twins).

Eligibility requirements

To be employed as a Ph.D. student, it is required that the applicant is or will be admitted to postgraduate education.

Eligible for admission to postgraduate education are those who have completed a degree at the advanced level, completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or in any other way within or outside the country acquired substantially corresponding knowledge (Chapter 7, Section 39 in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100)).

Desirable qualifications
  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent subject.
  • Good knowledge of computer-aided engineering approaches, where nonlinear FEM, rule-based design, parametric design etc and general model-based systems engineering approaches are a plus.
  • Experience applying artificial intelligence and machine learning within the engineering domain.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Documented experience in working with research and development.
  • Proficient skills in written and oral communication in English.
  • Good ability to express oneself in Swedish in speech and writing.
