Master Thesis - Measuring Business Value from CAD/PLM Features
Introduction
Thesis work is an excellent way to get closer to Scania and build relationships for the future. Many of today's employees began their Scania career with their degree project.
Are you interested in how engineering data can be used to understand whether digital solutions actually deliver the expected value? Join us within the CAD/vPDM organization and work with real engineering processes and data in the TRATON environment.
About us
The research and development organizations within TRATON work together to develop products and solutions across our brands. CAD and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems are an important foundation for this development and are used by designers and engineers throughout the product development process.
Within CAD/vPDM, we continuously develop and improve digital solutions to simplify engineering work, improve efficiency, and create value for our users.
Background
New CAD/PLM features are developed based on user and business requirements with an expected value, such as reducing process time, manual work or user interactions, or improving quality and efficiency. However, after implementation, we do not always have the data or measurement methods needed to determine whether the expected value was actually realized.
Objective
The objective of this thesis is to investigate how the expected business value of CAD/PLM features can be translated into measurable KPIs and validated using actual system and user-process data.
Job description
As part of the thesis, you will:
The expected result is a methodology that connects:
Business need → Requirement → Expected value → KPI → Data → Actual result → Realized value
The thesis should help us move from "we believe this feature creates value" towards "we can measure whether the expected value was actually realized."
Education/program/focus:
We are looking for two MSc students within Computer Science, Data Science, AI, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
You are analytical, curious and structured, with an interest in engineering, data analytics and business/process improvement. Experience with Python, SQL, data visualization, process analytics, AI/ML or CAD/PLM is an advantage.
Contact persons and supervisors:
Christian Pritzel, Manager, christian.pritzel@scania.com
Application:
Your application must include a CV, personal letter and transcript of grades.
A background check might be conducted for this position. We are conducting interviews continuously and may close the recruitment earlier than the date specified.

Objective
The objective of this thesis is to investigate how the expected business value of CAD/PLM features can be translated into measurable KPIs and validated using actual system and user-process data.
Job description
As part of the thesis, you will:
- Investigate selected CAD/PLM features and their expected business value.
- Define measurable KPIs, baselines and relevant measurement points.
- Explore available CAD/PLM data and identify what can be used to measure realized value.
- Apply the approach to selected real use cases and identify missing data needed for measurement.
- Develop a reusable Business Value Measurement Framework for future feature development.
- Demonstrate and validate the approach through a proof of concept using suitable data analytics and visualization methods.

Business need → Requirement → Expected value → KPI → Data → Actual result → Realized value
The thesis should help us move from "we believe this feature creates value" towards "we can measure whether the expected value was actually realized."
