30 hp - Measuring Green Areas at Industrial Sites: Adapting a Method

Introduction
Would you like to contribute to improving how green areas and biodiversity are managed within industrial operations?

In this Master's thesis project, you will have the opportunity to explore how green areas can be measured and monitored at Scania's industrial sites in Södertälje. The project combines method development with practical application and may contribute to Scania's future environmental work globally.

A Master's thesis project is an excellent opportunity to get to know Scania and build relationships for the future. Many of our current employees started their careers at Scania by completing their thesis with us.

Background

Green areas at industrial sites play an important role in supporting biodiversity, ecosystem services and climate adaptation. At the same time, industrial sites are continuously being developed through new buildings, infrastructure and other changes that may affect existing green areas.

Scania has an environmental principle for biodiversity, but currently lacks a common method for measuring and monitoring changes in green areas and their values across its industrial sites.

Several methods are available for measuring and assessing green areas, biodiversity and ecosystem services, including the Green Area Factor ("Grönytefaktor", GYF), Climb and the Green Benefits Model (GBM). GYF is primarily used in urban planning and development and is therefore not fully adapted to the conditions found at larger industrial sites.

Scania Group Environment wants to investigate which method best meets Scania's needs and how it could be adapted for industrial sites. The starting point is GYF, but the approach may change based on the comparison with Climb and GBM. The method should provide a practical tool for assessing green areas and monitoring changes over time.

Objective
The objective of this Master's thesis is to propose a practical method for measuring and monitoring green areas at industrial sites.

The starting point is to adapt the Green Area Factor (GYF), while also comparing it with Climb and the Green Benefits Model (GBM) to determine which approach best meets Scania's needs.

The method should provide a clear picture of the current situation and make it possible to monitor changes resulting from construction and development projects.

Job description
During the thesis project, the student is expected to:

  • Compare the strengths and limitations of GYF, Climb and GBM based on Scania's needs and conditions.
  • Evaluate how well the methods can be used to measure changes before and after a project.
  • Assess how easily the methods can be used by project managers and others without specialist knowledge of biodiversity or ecosystem services.
  • Select a suitable method based on the comparison and adapt it for industrial sites.
  • Test the method in a pilot study at Scania in Södertälje, with the aim of making it applicable across Scania globally.
  • Evaluate the results and provide recommendations on how the method can be used to monitor changes in green areas over time.
  • If time allows, develop simple and practical guide for using the selected method.

The ambition is to develop a method that is simple, transparent and practical to use at industrial sites.
