Thesis Student - Facilitating Recycled Aluminium Alloys For Corrosion
Scania GroupRekommenderat
Sammanfattning
This master's thesis opportunity focuses on investigating the corrosion performance of recycled aluminium alloys by varying surface roughness. Conducted at a university in Södertälje, the project involves advanced techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) to analyze microstructures and their correlation with corrosion behavior. The role is ideal for students in Material Science or related fields, offering hands-on experience with industrial-Jobbet i korthet

30 hp - Facilitating Recycled Aluminium Alloys For Corrosion Through By Varying Surface Roughness
Background
Corrosion depends heavily on the phases present at the surface. To control this, machining is often done to reduce surface defects. Additionally, it makes it less or more hydrophobic. Comparing how these factors affect recycled cast aluminium alloys (which perform worse than new) can give insight in how to appropriately use these materials in future parts. The work will be conducted in both neutral, but also crevice corrosion-like conditions, to tackle the more problematic environment.
Job description
The thesis will include:
The exact experimental parameters and scope will be refined during the project based on the initial results and available project time.
Expected outcomes: Outcomes include an analysis of how modifying the surface roughness affects the corrosion performance of the recycled and primary alloys. The expected results can directly help in strategic material choice in future component, or assist as a tool to alleviate problematic corrosion.
What you will gain: Within this thesis, you get the opportunity to analyse materials used in automotive components, and use industrial relevant instruments while contributing to scientific research. The project centres both SEM-EDS and electrochemical measurements, which are two cornerstones of materials characterisation.
Location: The thesis will be conducted at your host university.

Job description
The thesis will include:
- Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) mapping of as-cast and polished surfaces.
- Correlate the found microstructures with corrosion and electrochemical performance.
- Investigate if certain roughness profiles benefit corrosion performance.
- Compare the performance of recycled and primary (new) aluminium alloys.
- Evaluate the surface conditions in both neutral and crevice-like conditions, which are the most critical for corrosion of vehicles.
The exact experimental parameters and scope will be refined during the project based on the initial results and available project time.
