The Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts research in several areas, including endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, hypertension, respiratory medicine and allergology, and clinical nutrition focusing on body composition and energy metabolism. The research is conducted in close collaboration with health care at both the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Mölndal Hospital

At the Sahlgrenska Osteoporosis Centre (Centre for Bone and Arthritis Research, CBAR), interdisciplinary and translational research is conducted on skeletal diseases, including osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Here, physicians, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students, and biomedical analysts work together to improve the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases affecting skeletal structure and function. The advertised research position will be based at the Sahlgrenska Osteoporosis Centre (SOC). Researchers at SOC were the first to demonstrate that the gut microbiota affects bone mass.

The candidate will be involved in a project funded by an ERC Advanced Grant awarded to Professor Claes Ohlsson. Within the project, the researchers will study the importance of bacteria, viruses, and fungi for various clinical phenotypes. The project has access to metagenomic sequencing data from more than 34,000 study participants, together with extensive clinical phenotype data, and is therefore uniquely designed to establish the possible causality of the human gut microbiota in relation to disease.

Job assignments

You will be involved in the development of formulations based on short-chain fatty acids incorporated into different matrices and/or nanoparticle systems for optimal release and delivery in the gastrointestinal tract. The position involves responsibility for analyses using GC-MS, NMR, and other chromatographic techniques. You are expected to contribute to the research group's methodological development in materials characterization. The project also includes the synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles as well as the chemical modification of polysaccharides to achieve optimal material properties. The work will be conducted in close collaboration with medical researchers evaluating the developed products in vivo

Qualifications

A PhD in Materials Science, Materials Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field is required for this position. Documented research experience concerning the impact of materials on gastrointestinal health and function is also required. The applicant must have documented experience in GC-MS and NMR analyses as well as chemical synthesis. Experience in the development and characterization of nanoparticles for medical or pharmaceutical applications is highly desirable. Experience with in vitro models that mimic conditions in the gastrointestinal tract is also advantageous. Excellent written and spoken English communication skills are required. Scientific publications within relevant research fields are considered an advantage. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. We are seeking a candidate who can work independently, collaborate effectively with colleagues, and demonstrate a strong ability to plan, organize, and drive the work forward.
