Researcher in Climate-Related Migration - CLIMIG

The School of Global Studies is seeking a full-time researcher for a 12-month position in the CLIMIG research program-A New Interdisciplinary Framework for Studying the Relationship Between Climate Change and Migration.

About the Project

CLIMIG is an interdisciplinary research program that examines how climate change interacts with social, cultural, economic, political, and ecological factors that influence migration. The program focuses on three mountainous regions that are particularly vulnerable to climate change: the Ethiopian Highlands, the Andes in Peru, and the Himalayas in Nepal. By combining qualitative and quantitative methods and integrating climate, migration, and socioeconomic data, the project aims to develop a new analytical framework for the study of climate-related migration.

Job Responsibilities

As a researcher at CLIMIG, you will primarily work with the analysis of quantitative data on migration, climate change, and related socioeconomic conditions, as well as qualitative data, from the project's research sites in Peru, Ethiopia, and Nepal. The work involves analyzing and integrating survey data, spatial data (including remote sensing data), and interview data, as well as publishing the project's findings in scientific journals.

The duties may also include combining quantitative and qualitative research findings, as well as organizing and participating in workshops where research findings are shared with relevant stakeholders. The work is carried out in close collaboration with other researchers and international partners within CLIMIG.

Qualifications

This position requires a Ph.D. in human geography, development studies, migration studies, social anthropology, or another field that the employer deems relevant to the project.

You must have documented experience in research on climate-related migration or related issues, as well as strong expertise in quantitative social science methods and statistical analysis, and in qualitative data collection and analysis. Experience conducting research in the Andes, Ethiopia, and/or Nepal is a plus.

The following are particularly advantageous:

• experience leading research and fieldwork teams, particularly in the Global South

• experience with geographic information systems (GIS), such as QGIS or ArcGIS, for the analysis and presentation of spatial data

• experience combining survey data with remote sensing data or other types of spatial data

• expertise and experience in combining quantitative and qualitative methods in data collection and analysis, particularly in the Global South

• experience organizing or facilitating workshops to disseminate research findings to relevant stakeholders.

• Experience leading and managing international research networks

Great emphasis will be placed on the ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within an interdisciplinary and international research team. You must have strong organizational skills as well as excellent communication and academic writing skills in English.

Employment

This is a special fixed-term position for 12 months, full-time (100 percent), based at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg. Start date: January 1, 2027.
