Om jobbet
The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 58 000 students and 6800 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The Institute of Clinical Sciences is one of six Institutes within Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg. We conduct research and education that puts people's health and quality of life in focus. We represent 16 different research areas and are divided into four sections. Through a fruitful collaboration with the healthcare and Sahlgrenska University Hospital, we have developed joint projects and meeting places that benefits both health care and research.
At the Department of Oncology, research and teaching focus on non-surgical treatment methods for tumor diseases, such as immunotherapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy.
Max Levin's research group studies the connection between immune-related adverse events and treatment efficacy in cancer therapy using immunotherapy (immune checkpoint inhibitors). The advertised position aims to identify immune mechanisms underlying exceptionally good responses to immunotherapy and involves the analysis of a unique clinical material from more than 250 cancer patients who have been followed with regular sampling for up to eight years.
Subject area
Oncology
Subject area description
Modern immunotherapy with checkpoint inhibitors has revolutionized cancer treatment and cures some patients with previously incurable cancer. At the same time, roughly half of patients do not respond to the treatment and die from their disease.
Our research group conducts detailed studies of the immune system in patients who respond exceptionally well to treatment. In particular, we aim to understand why certain immune-related adverse events are linked to extremely good treatment outcomes. Over the past eight years, we have gathered an extensive clinical cohort of patients with these types of adverse events and followed them over time, in some cases for many years. We collaborate with leading immunologists locally at Sahlgrenska and internationally at the NIH, Dana-Farber, and INSERM in Marseille.
Duties
The overall goal of the project is to map immune mechanisms in blood and tumors in cancer patients with response-associated immune-related adverse events. This involves extensive analyses of a unique clinical material. The techniques used include culturing of immune cells and tumor cells, flow cytometry, single-cell RNA sequencing of immune cells from cancer patients, T-cell clonality analysis, CITE-sequencing, flow cytometry, proteomics, multiplex immunofluorescence, and spatial transcriptomics. The results are analyzed using bioinformatic methods.
Eligibility
To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.
In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Assessment criteria
The applicant must have an undergraduate education and a doctoral degree in molecular biology, biomedicine, medical doctor or similar. A doctoral degree in oncology or immunology/inflammation research is considered a strong asset. Documented experience in laboratory work and bioinformatic analyses is considered a merit.
Great emphasis is placed on personal qualities, particularly the ability to work independently and strong organizational skills. The successful candidate is expected to independently plan, perform, and analyze experiments, as well as actively contribute scientifically to the research group. The applicant should possess excellent general research skills, strong writing abilities, and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team. A very good command of spoken and written English is essential.
