Beskrivning
The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 58 000 students and 6800 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts research in several areas, including osteoporosis, endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, hypertension, respiratory medicine and allergology, and clinical nutrition focusing on body composition and energy metabolism. The research is conducted in close collaboration with health care at both the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Mölndal Hospital.
The Krefting Research Centre (http://krefting.gu.se), Institute of Medicine, University of Gothenburg, is now recruiting a postdoctoral researcher. The Centre brings together more than 20 researchers and research nurses, organized into three complementary areas: the epidemiology of asthma, mechanistic studies of inflammation, and extracellular vesicles. This collaborative environment offers excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange and professional development. An important resource at the Centre is the Swedish National Airway Register (SNAR), a national quality register that enables large-scale clinical and epidemiological studies of patients with asthma and COPD in routine Swedish healthcare. The register contains longitudinal data on disease characteristics, treatment, and clinical outcomes and can be linked to other national health data registers, providing opportunities to investigate disease course, treatment patterns, prognosis, and other clinically relevant questions. Another important research resource is the West Sweden Asthma Study (WSAS), a large population-based epidemiological study of asthma and lung diseases. Research is conducted within a broad network of national and international collaborations, including Breathe Sweden. The successful candidate will work on epidemiological research questions in asthma and COPD, with a particular focus on analyses of SNAR data and linked register data, while also having opportunities to contribute to projects based on WSAS and other research collaborations. The position therefore offers excellent opportunities to develop independent research with clear clinical relevance in the field of airway diseases.
Subject area
Clinical and epidemiological studies of airway diseases
Specific subject description
Airway diseases such as asthma and COPD are complex conditions in which disease courses and clinical outcomes can be difficult to predict. Large epidemiological studies with longitudinal data are needed to improve our understanding of their long-term consequences and treatment in clinical practice. The Swedish National Airway Register (SNAR) is a key resource enabling clinical and epidemiological studies of patients with asthma and COPD in routine clinical care in Sweden, including studies of disease course, treatment, treatment patterns, clinical outcomes, and prognosis. The West Sweden Asthma Study (WSAS) provides a complementary resource for population-based epidemiological research on asthma and lung diseases. Together, these data sources provide excellent opportunities to address a broad range of clinically relevant and epidemiological research questions related to asthma and COPD.
Job assignments
The role involves responsibility for analysing and publishing results from epidemiological studies of airway diseases, with a particular focus on data from the Swedish National Airway Register (SNAR) and the West Sweden Asthma Study (WSAS). An important part of the work will address clinical and epidemiological research questions in COPD, including treatment, treatment patterns, disease course, and clinical outcomes. The position will also involve other epidemiological research questions related to both COPD and asthma. The work includes independent management and analysis of large longitudinal datasets and responsibility for ensuring high scientific standards in data quality and statistical analyses. Results will be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented at national and international scientific meetings. The role requires the ability to work independently and drive research projects forward, while collaborating closely with researchers at the Krefting Research Centre, the University of Gothenburg, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and national and international research partners. The position also includes contributing to the supervision of PhD students and other junior researchers associated with the projects.
Eligibility
To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject, or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.
In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.
Assessment
The applicant must have a PhD degree in biomedicine, clinical research, health sciences, epidemiology, statistics, or another relevant field, and have documented experience in statistical modeling within clinical research or epidemiology. Excellent oral and written English skills are required, as well as the ability to produce coherent scientific texts, demonstrated by at least one published first-author article. Research experience in COPD and/or asthma is considered an advantage. Research experience in pharmacology and/or public health, as well as experience in statistical analyses using SAS, SPSS and/or R, is also considered an advantage. The position requires good collaborative skills for working with colleagues and external research groups, as well as the ability to work independently, in a structured manner, and to drive research projects forward. Great importance will be placed on personal suitability, particularly collaborative skills, independence, and a structured approach to work.
