Master's Thesis: 30hp - Enabling an Integrated Engineering Value Flow: A Systems Approach to Digital Transformation in Multi Brand R&D
Introduction
A thesis project at TRATON is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience, build a professional network, and contribute to future transportation solutions. You will work in an international, multi brand R&D environment and gain first hand insight into an ongoing organizational and digital transformation.
Background
TRATON Group R&D Base Engine is undergoing an organizational and digital transformation towards a more integrated multi-brand R&D environment, with common processes and new ways of working.
Effective integration goes beyond formal structures and processes. It depends on how people collaborate, how information and knowledge flow across organizational boundaries, and how digital systems support engineering work. Understanding these interactions is key to developing a more integrated engineering value flow.
Objective
The objective of this thesis is to explore how people, ways of working, information flows, and digital systems influence engineering value flow, and to propose recommendations for continued organizational and digital transformation.
Using a systems-thinking perspective, the study will examine different stakeholder perspectives, identify key enablers and constraints, and explore desirable and feasible changes towards a more integrated engineering value flow.
Job Description
The thesis work will combine theoretical study with an empirical investigation of the ongoing transformation within a multi-brand R&D environment.
Your work will include:
• Conducting a literature review on engineering value flow, systems thinking, digital transformation, information systems, and organizational change.
• Mapping the current engineering value flow across organizational and brand boundaries.
• Conducting semi-structured interviews to understand different stakeholder perspectives, ways of working, information flows, and digital systems.
• Applying a systems thinking approach, to identify key enablers and constraints affecting an integrated engineering value flow.
• Developing desirable and feasible improvement proposals and recommendations to support continued organizational and digital transformation.
Expected Deliverables
• A current-state mapping of the engineering value flow.
• A systemic analysis of key enablers, constraints, and stakeholder perspectives.
• A conceptual future-state proposal for a more integrated engineering value flow.
• Practical recommendations for continued organizational and digital transformation.
Education/program/focus
We are looking for a curious, motivated, and analytical Master's student with a strong interest in digital transformation, information systems, systems thinking, and organizational development. You are interested in understanding complex organizational problems and how people, ways of working, information flows, and digital systems interact in an engineering environment.
You should be comfortable working independently, conducting qualitative analysis, and communicating with stakeholders from different roles and organizational backgrounds.
Preferred qualifications
• Master's-level studies in Information Systems, Informatics or a related field.
• Interest in digital transformation, organizational change, and engineering development processes.
• Interest in systems thinking and qualitative research methods.
• Ability to conduct and analyze interviews with stakeholders from different organizational perspectives.
• Strong analytical and communication skills.
• Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
