Beskrivning

30 hp - Thesis Student: Design of steering wheel

A thesis project at Scania is an excellent way of making contacts for your future working life, and many of our current employees started their career with a thesis project!

Do you want to influence the design of the steering wheel?

At Scania we continuously develop and improve our trucks and its ingoing parts. Certain components cannot change drastically, but technology develops so quickly that we need to react fast to be there side by side. In order to do so, we want to study the possibilities for further improvement. This is where you come in!

The steering wheel is the crown of the cab interior and the main focus of the driver station. It is not only a visual/tactile component, but it should perform premium as the brand itself. New technologies, legislations and innovation projects are available which are now adopted in passenger cars.

The team you will be a part of is working with the driver control unit and the instrument panel. We are a creative group that always share knowledge. We will support you in the design and development process.

The assignment

The assignment is to come up with a proposal on how Scania's next generation steering wheels can look like.

You should explore and research available and future techniques and functions, connect to brand identity legacy, understand legal and ergonomic demands, get the feeling of the user experience, etc.

To know what is available, you should do a benchmark in trucks and personal cars. You can even research other relevant work environments and products where people interact with in similar ways.

When the research is done, the creative phase will start with the development of one or several different concepts that fulfill future demands. With the knowledge gained from the research, the concepts and techniques should be evaluated, to identify the most suitable concept, which will be brought out as a prototype.

Your profile

We are looking for two degree/thesis project students that like to drive innovation and look into new possible solutions. You are a master student with focus in, for example, mechanical engineering, product development, industrial design engineering, or similar. We prefer two students that would work together, but you don't have to team up with someone else. That can be arranged by our end.

The start date will be in January 2027 and the estimated time is 20 work weeks per students, or the equivalent for 30 credits. We want you to be on site at Scania in Södertälje most of the time, but there are also possibilities to work remotely from time to time. English is required but both Swedish and English is spoken.
