Master Thesis - Nozzle Design for Spray Shape Optimization
Scania GroupRekommenderat
Sammanfattning
This thesis project at Scania focuses on optimizing nozzle design for high pressure liquid injectors, aiming to analyze the impact of geometric features on combustion performance and spray morphology. The work involves running simulations using AVL Fire 3D CFD software in a Linux environment, with a focus on postprocessing results. The position is based in Södertälje, Sweden, and is expected to last for five months, starting in January 2027.Jobbet i korthet

Beskrivning
30 hp - Nozzle Design for Spray Shape Optimization
Introduction
Thesis work is an excellent way to get closer to Scania and build relationships for the future. Many of today's employees began their Scania career with their degree project.
Background
The project aim is to investigate and quantify the performance impact of geometric design features in high pressure liquid injectors and their dependence on nozzle boundary conditions.
Objective
The expected outcome is to isolate the qualitative impacts of the injector flow conditions on the combustion performance and the liquid spray morphology. Typical spray properties to be studied include spray target angle, spray cone angle and spray tip penetration.
Job description
Focus will be on running simulations on a given geometry and the postprocessing of model results. However, if interesting new design ideas evolve, other geometries could be included if time allows.
The simulations are done in two steps. Firstly, a 3-fluid (liquid, fuel vapor and air) nozzle flow simulation is conducted and time resolved flow results from the nozzle orifice are extracted. Secondly, these results are transferred to a Lagrangian spray model for high pressure liquid injection, from which the combustion performance is assessed.
The simulations are done using the AVL Fire 3D CFD software package. We work in a Linux environment with very powerful hardware and a simulation is usually completed in 10 hours. Postprocessing is usually done with scripts (e.g. bash, awk, Perl, Python and Matlab) and a plotting program (e.g. XMGRace or GnuPlot).
Education/program/focus
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics or similar, with specialisation in modelling and simulation.
Number of students: 1 or 2
Start date for the thesis work: Jan 2027 or according to an agreement.
