China has become one of the world's most important AI markets, with rapid development across consumer and enterprise applications. Alongside advances in AI models, Chinese companies are developing distinctive ways to commercialise AI, including low-cost services, open-source models, AI-enabled consumer platforms, enterprise solutions, and agentic AI.
These business models are shaped by a dynamic ecosystem that includes large digital platforms, strong mobile and e-commerce markets, intense competition, rapid product iteration, and government support. It remains an open question which elements are specific to China and which could succeed in international markets. Understanding how these models travel-and what that could mean for the global telecom industry-is the focus of this thesis.
The project will focus primarily on China's consumer market and relevant AI product areas, including models, applications, and devices.

- Explore how these developments could affect telecom operators' opportunities in AI services, AI-enabled network operations, and edge/AI infrastructure.
The skills you bring:
We are looking for a candidate who:
- Is analytical, curious, and open-minded.
- Is fluent in written and spoken English.
- Has native-level proficiency in Chinese.
- Has a background in business studies.
- Is a master's student with strong academic performance.
- Has in-depth knowledge of China's AI market; this is an advantage.
- Has strong knowledge of AI technology and global AI developments.
- Has experience with leading AI services such as GPT and Claude, as well as other AI tools and devices; this is an advantage.
- Has a strong interest in interdisciplinary research spanning both business and technology.
