Shape the future of energy.

Are you ready to challenge the status quo, bring fresh perspectives and contribute to solving one of society's most important challenges? We are looking for talented graduates to join the Vattenfall International Trainee Programme. This is your opportunity to accelerate your development, build a strong network across Vattenfall and contribute to the energy transition from day one.

About the traineeship.

This traineeship offers you a unique opportunity to kickstart your career in sustainable business. Each of the trainee positions is distinct, tied to a department within a specific business area and working location. This means that each position has its own tailored responsibilities, challenges and matching profile.

What you will experience

  • Personal and professional growth: Accelerate your development through structured learning, reflection, networking opportunities and real business challenges.
  • Cross-functional network: Connect with trainees and colleagues across Vattenfall's different markets, business areas and locations through programme activities, site visits and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Meaningful contribution: Take on real responsibilities from day one, contribute fresh perspectives and help shape the future of fossil free living.

As Joakim, a former International Trainee based in Stockholm, explains, “I expected beforehand that working at a corporate would mean only serious business. We do focus on learning and growth and bringing new perspectives to the company, but we also have fun and add humor and lightness. I feel like we are the change the company wants to see.”

Your role as a Trainee – Environmental Specialist

You will join Waste & Environment West, a team that supports Vattenfall's businesses with environmental expertise across hydropower, nuclear power, new nuclear, wind power and heat. In this role, you will contribute to environmental assessments, permitting activities and environmental coordination in projects and operational activities. You will collaborate with environmental specialists, project teams, technical experts and authorities, while gradually taking on more responsibility as your knowledge grows. This is an opportunity to develop your expertise in environmental management and environmental legislation while bringing a fresh perspective to the environmental challenges connected to the energy transition.

Your responsibilities:

  • Support environmental specialists with environmental matters in projects and operational activities across several of Vattenfall's business areas.
  • Contribute to environmental assessments, environmental plans, permit processes and environmental documentation.
  • Help review environmental legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in environmental coordination, environmental risk assessments and chemical-related matters.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, specialists and authorities across different energy technologies.
Qualifications

Your qualifications as a Trainee - Environmental Specialist

  • Academic background in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of environmental legislation, permitting processes, regulatory requirements or environmental management.
  • Experience of environmental matters in projects, permitting processes or interaction with authorities is considered an advantage. This experience may have been gained through a thesis project, internship, student employment or an early-career role.
  • Excellent communication skills in Swedish and English, both written and spoken.

You should also recognize yourself in

  • Enjoying collaboration with colleagues from different disciplines and building strong relationships across teams and stakeholders.
  • Being comfortable navigating changing priorities and new challenges.
  • Working in a structured and careful way when handling documentation, environmental requirements and stakeholder communication.
  • Being curious and motivated by learning how environmental considerations are applied across different energy technologies.

Whether you aspire to become an energy specialist, project manager, digital expert, engineer or future leader, the International Trainee Programme offers opportunities to explore your potential and build a meaningful career.

As Cato, a former International Trainee based in Amsterdam, mentions, “I feel we are part of leading the change in the energy transition. At Vattenfall we can contribute by adding our individual competencies and core values. I learn how to build relations and be resilient in an international organization.”

To be considered for our traineeship, you should:

  • Have completed, or expect to complete, an academic degree before the programme starts in March 2027
  • Have no more than one year of relevant work experience after graduation, excluding internships and working-student roles
  • Be fluent in English
  • Be available for the full-time programme from its start date
  • Have the right to work in the country where the position is based, or meet the stated work-permit requirements
  • Be open to mobility opportunities and collaborating across different locations.
  • Demonstrate curiosity, initiative and growth mindset while sharing our values: Active, Open, Positive and Safe.

Location: Gothenburg or Ringhals

You will be working in the Waste & Environment West team at Business Unit Vattenfall Power Solutions, located in Gothenburg and Ringhals, Sweden.
