On behalf of established hospitals and specialist departments across Ireland, we are seeking consultant respiratory physicians with experience in general internal medicine for 12- or 24-month contracts, with the possibility of extension.
This opportunity is ideal for specialists who enjoy working across both respiratory medicine and general internal medicine, managing a broad range of acute and chronic medical conditions while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams.
About the role
As a consultant respiratory physician, you will be involved in the assessment, treatment, and follow-up of patients with a wide range of respiratory and general medical conditions. The role combines outpatient clinics, inpatient care, acute medical assessments, and multidisciplinary collaboration. As is common in many Irish hospitals, the position includes responsibilities within both respiratory medicine and general internal medicine.
You will work alongside experienced colleagues in established specialist departments, with opportunities to contribute to teaching, service development, and quality improvement initiatives. Several hospitals also have close links to academic and research activities.
Typical responsibilities
Assessment and management of patients with acute and chronic respiratory diseases
Diagnosis and treatment of COPD, asthma, and other chronic respiratory conditions
Investigation and management of interstitial lung diseases
Assessment and follow-up of patients with lung cancer as part of multidisciplinary teams
Management of patients with respiratory failure
Bronchoscopy and other respiratory procedures, depending on experience
Participation in General Internal Medicine ward rounds and acute medical admissions
Management of patients with complex and multi-system medical conditions
Outpatient clinics and inpatient care
Supervision and mentoring of junior doctors and other healthcare professionals
Participation in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety work
Participation in on-call duties where applicable
Areas of expertise
We are interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
General respiratory medicine and general internal medicine
COPD and asthma
Interstitial lung diseases
Lung cancer and multidisciplinary cancer care
Respiratory failure and non-invasive ventilation (NIV)
Sleep-related breathing disorders
Bronchoscopy and diagnostic procedures
Pleural diseases
Pulmonary infections
We are looking for someone who
Is a specialist in respiratory medicine
Holds specialist certification and medical registration from an EU/EEA country
Has broad clinical experience in both respiratory medicine and general internal medicine
Is comfortable managing patients with complex and multisystem medical conditions
Has an interest in working within a new healthcare system
Has excellent English language skills, both written and spoken
Communicates effectively with patients, relatives, and colleagues
Thrives in an international and multidisciplinary working environment
Previous teaching and supervisory experience is an advantage
