Beskrivning
Introduction
A thesis project at Scania is an excellent opportunity to build connections for your future career. Many of our employees began their careers with a degree project.
Background
Truck cooling systems are designed to meet demanding operating conditions, but vehicles often operate below those limits. Managing airflow dynamically could help reduce fan power and aerodynamic drag when maximum cooling is not required, while ensuring that components remain within their required temperature limits.
Objective
The objective of this thesis is to investigate how active airflow management can reduce total vehicle energy consumption while maintaining the required thermal performance.
You will explore questions such as:
Suggested methodology
You will combine cooling-system models, available airflow or CFD results, and representative vehicle duty cycles. Based on your analysis, you will develop and compare control strategies and evaluate their energy consumption against a conventional passive system.
Expected outcome
The thesis is expected to deliver a dynamic airflow-management concept, a proposed control strategy, an estimate of the potential energy benefit, and recommendations for future vehicle implementation.
Education/program/focus
Indicate education, program or focus: Master's student in mechanical engineering, product development or similar related field. Knowledge and interest in fluid/thermal dynamics is prefered.
Number of students: 1
Start date for the thesis work: January 2027
Estimated time required: 20 weeks

Objective
The objective of this thesis is to investigate how active airflow management can reduce total vehicle energy consumption while maintaining the required thermal performance.
You will explore questions such as:
- When should airflow through the cooling module be increased, reduced or redirected?
- What trade-offs exist between fan power, vehicle aerodynamic drag and cooling performance?
- What benefits could active devices such as shutters, bypasses or variable flow paths provide?
- Can control strategies use vehicle operating conditions to anticipate cooling demand?
Suggested methodology
