Beskrivning

The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 58 000 students and 6800 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Clinical Sciences is one of six Institutes within Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg. We conduct research and education that puts people's health and quality of life in focus. We represent 16 different research areas and are divided into four sections. Through a fruitful collaboration with the healthcare and Sahlgrenska University Hospital, we have developed joint projects and meeting places that benefits both health care and research

We are currently seeking a teaching assistant to work in Peter Naredi's research group at the Department of Surgery.

Analysis of p38 MAP kinase inhibitors to improve cisplatin function :

The Peter Naredi lab studies the action of the anti-cancer drug cisplatin with focus on the cell biology basis for its function and to identify signalling pathways that modulate its response in the nematode C.elegans. Cisplatin is a commonly used anti-cancer drug whose cytotoxic effects are regulated by intracellular signaling pathways. One of the pathways that has been identified is the p38 MAP Kinase pathway. Knockdown of the pathway leads to enhanced cisplatin sensitivity

The p38/MAP kinase pathway has been identified as an important regulator of cisplatin response in both C. elegans and human tumor cells.

Understanding how this pathway can be modulated may improve treatment strategies. Using a humanized p38MAP Kinase model, the lab has tested inhibitors with the aim to conduct translational research into making cisplatin more effective. Similar work is also conducted on another genetic pathway that modulates cisplatin response.

Duties

The teaching assistent will assist with ongoing research projects in the laboratory and contribute to experimental work. Duties will include:
  • Performing drug treatment experiments and cytotoxicity assays.
  • Conducting gene expression analyses using quantitative PCR (qPCR).
  • Performing protein analyses, including Western blotting.
  • Assisting with fluorescence microscopy experiments and image acquisition.
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date laboratory records and documentation.
  • Presenting experimental results and progress updates at research group meetings.

Qualifications

To be eligible for the position as a teaching assistant, you must be enrolled in a first-cycle (undergraduate) or second-cycle (master's) programme. The cumulative duration of employment as an teaching assistent may not exceed three years.

We are looking for a candidate with documented experience working with Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) as a model system, including cultivation, genetic crossing schemes, and drug testing. The successful applicant should have practical experience with cytotoxicity assays and molecular biology techniques such as RNA and DNA extraction, RNA purification, qPCR, and protein analysis, including Western blotting.

Experience with fluorescence microscopy for gene expression analysis is required. The position also requires the ability to work independently, in a structured and meticulous manner, and to follow established protocols and instructions.

Good computer skills and excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential.

The following qualifications are considered meritorious:
