Beskrivning

The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 58 000 students and 6800 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

The Institute is composed of the following four departments:
  • The Department of Infectious Diseases
  • The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
  • The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
  • The Department of Laboratory Medicine

At present, the institute has about 315 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic researcher with a background in islet physiology and single-cell genomics to join the lab of Dr. Joan Camuñas. The lab of Dr. Joan Camuñas stands at the interface of genomics, biophysics and precision medicine. Our mission is to develop experimental and computational methods to identify molecular mechanisms leading to dysfunctional cellular states in human disease (www.camunaslab.org).

The candidate will contribute to the improve Slice-seq, a new method to study human pancreatic tissue slices using high-resolution calcium imaging in combination with spatial transcriptomics. The researcher will develop methods to improve the viability of pancreatic slices cultures, develop approaches for their cryopreservation, and distribution. The researcher will also run single-cell genomic and spatial transcriptomic assays on pancreatic tissue.

The project will require significant interdisciplinary work in the areas of physiology, molecular biology and islet biology. The research group is embedded in the Wallenberg Center for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM) and SciLifeLab in the University of Gothenburg. and is tightly connected to a broad network of international collaborators.

Duties
  • Develop and perform high-resolution spatial transcriptomics in multiple slices.
  • Perform high-resolution calcium imaging in acute pancreatic tissue slices.
  • Perform single-cell protocols using high-throughput liquid handling instrumentation.
  • Develop methods to improve acute tissue slice culture, cryopreservation and distribution.
  • Analyze the generated data, design and perform validations through tissue imaging and other functional measurements.
  • Lead the project, present results in group meetings and conferences, and write research papers based on scientific discoveries.
  • Help supervise and mentor junior team members.

Qualifications

The ideal candidates should have the following qualifications:
  • PhD in a relevant research area (e.g. Physiology, Molecular Biology).
  • Highly motivated, proactive and diligent.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Experience working with acute pancreatic slices.
  • Experience in experimental methods in spatial transcriptomics and single-cell genomics (Parse is a plus).
  • Experience in pancreatic islet biology
  • Knowledge in using a variety of methods including cell culture, molecular biology, and biochemistry is advantageous.
  • Good skills in both written and spoken English are required.

Employment

The employment is full time and temporary, 10 months, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
