About this opportunity:

Ericsson radio products are developed in multiple variants with different heat-sink geometries, mechanical interfaces, and installation requirements. To support future platform strategies and reduce product complexity, there is a need to standardize mechanical features such as handles and feet across product families.

A common platform solution can reduce design variation, simplify manufacturing and assembly, improve cost efficiency, and enable reuse across future radio products. The solution must also meet requirements for structural performance, robustness, serviceability, production, and product lifecycle management.

What you will do:

  • Map and analyze existing handle and foot solutions across multiple radio product variants.
  • Define functional, mechanical, manufacturing, cost, service, and platform requirements for standardized solutions.
  • Investigate and compare integrated solutions incorporated into the radio structure or heat sink with separate attachable or screw-on concepts.
  • Evaluate suitable materials and manufacturing methods, such as injection-molded polymers, bent sheet metal, tubular structures, wire-formed components, and cast solutions.
  • Assess structural strength, durability, load-carrying capability, alignment, manufacturability, assembly efficiency, production and material cost (TK), repairability, weight, sustainability, and recyclability.
  • Perform engineering calculations and structural simulations to refine and optimize the proposed solution.
  • Build and evaluate prototypes or demonstrators to verify mechanical feasibility and functionality.
  • Consider usability and handling requirements as supporting design criteria, with input from relevant Human Centered Design stakeholders.
  • Recommend a scalable platform solution that balances mechanical performance, manufacturability, cost efficiency, serviceability, and lifecycle requirements.

The skills you bring:

  • You are currently pursuing a master's degree in mechanical engineering, Machine Design, Product Development, Engineering Design, or a similar field with a strong mechanical focus.
  • Interest in mechanical design, structural analysis, materials, manufacturing technologies, CAD, prototyping, and Design for X (DFx).
  • Good analytical, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
  • The thesis is suitable for 2 students and corresponds to 30 ECTS credits per student.
  • Preferred start date: January 2027.
