Beskrivning

The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 58 000 students and 6800 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Biomaterials has an internationally leading position in the field of integration of implants and prostheses in hard and soft tissues. Novel, sustainable clinical implant solutions require a fundamental knowledge of the mechanisms which determine successful implant-tissue interfaces and functional performance. Research is performed in interdisciplinary collaboration with national and international universities and companies, including clinical colleagues and material scientists.

The department seeks a Associate Researcher to support a collaborative project between the University of Gothenburg and Université Laval (Canada) investigating the biological effects of biodegradable magnesium implants. The research group has demonstrated that the degradation of magnesium implants in tissues influence inflammation, mechanically-driven signals and tissue regeneration. This project will use in vitro cell culture models to study how gas bubbles released during magnesium degradation influence the behaviour of inflammatory cells and mesenchymal stromal cells.

Duties

The Associate Researcher will support ongoing research activities related to cell culture and in vitro degradation studies of biodegradable magnesium-based materials. The work includes assisting with laboratory experiments, carrying out basic analytical procedures under supervision, and contributing to data collection, documentation, and other routine laboratory tasks. The position offers practical research experience in a collaborative academic environment, and all necessary training will be provided.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a background in biomaterials, materials science, biomedical engineering, or a related field. A demonstrated interest in biodegradable magnesium and biomaterials research is required. The successful candidate should be able to work carefully both independently and as part of a team, and have good written and spoken communication skills in English. Previous laboratory experience or research on magnesium implants is considered an advantage but is not required, as full training will be provided.

Employment

The employment is temporary until 2026-08-31, full-time (100%), and placed at the Institute of Clinical Sciences, Department of Biomaterials.
