Performance practices

Subject area description

The subject area of performance practices specialising in musical drama/musical drama performance consists of musical, vocal and physical expression and how this is brought together to form a cohesive dramatic whole. The course explores and develops skills in musical drama performance based on the music, the stage action, and the character's intentions and inner life.

This programme integrates practical knowledge of opera and musical theatre, as well as musical drama characterisation and stage analysis, with skills in vocal technique, musical rehearsal/interpretation, aural training, opera/musical theatre theory, movement, dance, artistic creativity, and social skills. The importance of the ensemble, the orchestra, and the conductor for the student's ability to communicate clearly is emphasised and developed. The importance of recognising and understanding the audience's role in musical drama storytelling is also a key element in the student's overall understanding of their future profession. Students practice the ability to engage with the artistic experience in a holistic environment. Together, the various components of the programme aim to foster the coherent artistic development of the student in this context of musical drama. The aim is to equip students with the skills to work in various forms of musical drama, on opera and musical theatre stages large and small, as well as in various media such as film, television, and radio.
