Summary

We are looking for a driven RF/Microwave Engineer to take a key role in the design, development, and testing of next-generation high-power microwave heating systems. The position is linked to an Industrial PhD opportunity at Uppsala University and to the Swedish Energy Agency funded EMBRACE project, in collaboration with RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. The research will focus on microwave-based electrode drying for more energy efficient and sustainable battery manufacturing, while the industrial work will cover RF system design, prototype development, measurement, control, and pilot-scale validation.

You will work from concept to prototype: simulating, fabricating, and characterizing RF components and subsystems, including solid-state power amplifiers, matching networks, antennas, and microwave applicators. The role combines academic research with hands-on industrial development, from early-stage concepts and laboratory validation to pilot-scale deployment.

The ideal candidate combines strong analytical skills with hands-on laboratory experience and is motivated to pursue doctoral research in an environment that blends academic research, product development, and systems-level thinking.

Industrial PhD and EMBRACE Project Context

The candidate will work in an industrial environment at Percy Roc while pursuing doctoral studies at Uppsala University. The doctoral research will be connected to EMBRACE, which develops and validates microwave-based electrode drying as a route to reduce energy consumption in lithium-ion battery manufacturing while maintaining electrode quality and industrial scalability.

Within this framework, Percy Roc contributes microwave-system design, power electronics, and industrialization expertise, while RISE contributes process validation, and scalability assessment. The doctoral work will connect electromagnetic and RF design with thermal process control, measurement, modelling, and pilot-scale verification.

Project background: Microwave-Based Electrode Drying for Sustainable Battery Manufacturing

Key Responsibilities

Simulate, model, and optimize RF/MW circuits, subsystems, and full system architectures (e.g. solid-state power amplifiers, antenna, matching networks).

Design and implement RF/microwave components, including power amplifiers, combiners, filters, directional couplers, and custom packaging solutions.

Prototype, characterize, and validate hardware using instruments such as VNAs, spectrum analyzers, and load-pull setups.

Collaborate with embedded, mechanical, and system engineers on system-level integration.

Contribute to antenna system design and performance evaluation for heating and field strength control.

Develop and maintain automated measurement setups using Python.

Work with manufacturing teams on design for manufacturability, test procedures, and performance tuning.

Participate in customer-driven product development cycles, refining designs to meet application-specific needs.

Support patent drafting and engage in technical publications or conference contributions.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or equivalent, with a focus on RF/microwave engineering, electromagnetics, power electronics, or a closely related field.

Relevant research or industry experience in RF/microwave circuit or system design; experience gained through a Master's thesis, research project, or industry role is relevant.

Proven skills in modeling and simulation tools: ADS, HFSS, CST, AWR, or similar.

Experience working with RF measurement equipment: VNAs, signal generators, spectrum analyzers.

Strong initiative, analytical mindset, and problem-solving drive.

Fluent in English (written and spoken). Swedish is a plus.

Strong motivation to pursue doctoral studies at Uppsala University and to work

across academic and industrial environments.

Preferred Skills & Experience

Experience designing both linear and nonlinear RF blocks: power amplifiers, antennas, and cavity resonators.

Deep understanding of microwave passive components, transmission lines, and RF layout.

Experience with antenna design, field uniformity control, and electromagnetic field simulations.

Proficiency in Altium, KiCad or equivalent PCB layout tools.

Familiarity with Python, Matlab for RF system modeling and measurement automation.

Demonstrated ability to work across domains bridging analog hardware with digital control and embedded systems.

Exposure to industrial heating applications, thermal-microwave interaction, or microwave safety compliance is a bonus.

Experience with battery manufacturing, electrode coating or drying, materials processing, multiphysics modelling, or thermal-process control is an advantage.

Track record in IP generation, publications writing and/or entrepreneurial projects is highly valued.

Ideally starting on the 1st of September.
