Beskrivning

The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 58 000 students and 6800 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts translational research primarily on metabolism, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease in order to improve health and healthcare in the community. The overall goal is to create an excellent translational research environment of a very high international standard.

The intestines contain the body's largest populations of both bacteria and immune cells. Remarkably, these two populations are separated by just a single layer of epithelium. However, mucus, secreted by goblet cells, provides an additional protective barrier on top of the epithelium. The core components of this barrier are mucin glycoproteins. Still, this barrier is far from sterile. Mucin glycans constitute an important source of energy for certain bacteria and also act as attachment sites for bacteriophages.

Leveraging clinical cohorts and mechanistic models, our group studies:
  • How diet and gut physiology influences interactions between phages, bacteria and the human host at the gut mucosal interface
  • How disruption of interactions between phages, bacteria and the human immune system may contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation in the context of intestinal and metabolic diseases.

The overall aim is to design targeted dietary interventions to strengthen the mucus barrier and restore mucosal homeostasis.

Duties

As a Researcher, you will study bacterial and viral translocation, as well as mucosal immune responses in endoscopic biopsies from patients with different intestinal diseases, using techniques such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), immunohistochemistry and qPCR. You will also test mechanistic hypotheses in in vitro systems. You will work together with clinicians, bioinformaticians and molecular biologists in a multidisciplinary team to investigate hypotheses central to the research focus of the group.

Qualifications

Required qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD degree in the biomedical field.

Meritorious qualifications
Meritorious qualifications include experience in research on gastrointestinal physiology and pathophysiology, as well as experience working with human samples, particularly biopsy tissue. Experience with techniques such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), immunohistochemistry and/or immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, and cell culture is also considered an asset. Furthermore, experience of working in a multidisciplinary research environment and in an international research environment with English as the working language is considered meritorious.

Personal skills and qualities
The successful candidate will be structured and quality-focused, while also being flexible and proactive, with strong analytical problem-solving skills. A high level of ability to collaborate and to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, is essential for the position. Great importance will be attached to personal suitability.
