Subject description

A Researcher position in aquaculture and circular bioeconomy is available in the Department of Conservation. The position is focused on technical innovation in sustainable food production systems involving aquaculture, aquaponics and shellfish aquaculture. The successful candidate will manage research in a variety of blue economy and circular food bioeconomy projects within the Department of Conservation, and requires expertise in biological, technological, and economic aspects of production.

Given the importance of microbial processes in food cultivation, microbiology is a central pillar of the role. The candidate will contribute microbiology expertise to shellfish aquaculture hatchery applications, aquaponics and controlled-environment food production research within the group. This includes amplicon-based community profiling and longitudinal microbiome monitoring, where community shifts are tracked before and after treatments are applied. Furthermore, the positions necessitates that the successful candidate demonstrate the ability to analyse and apply data on microbial community structure to better understand bottlenecks and limitations related to production stability, particularly in hatcheries or recirculating aquaculture. Across projects, the role connects microbial community structure, process models, and economic models to system functionality and suitability in production environments.

Subject areas: Circular bioeconomy, sustainable food production, aquaculture and aquaponics, process engineering, economic modelling, resource recovery, blue economy

Duties

The successful candidate will manage research activities in funded projects spanning shellfish aquaculture, aquaponics, and other circular food production systems. Responsibilities include coordinating research, in particular developing novel bioengineering solutions and applying process and economic models to assess system viability and scalability, and linking technical performance to production bottlenecks and business constraints. The role involves collaboration with industrial, academic, and public-sector partnerships, preparation of publications and funder reporting, and contribution to outreach and project deliverables.

The candidate will be based at the Department of Conservation, University of Gothenburg. They will work multidisciplinary research group addressing sustainable food production through aquaculture, aquaponics, shellfish culture, and circular resource use. The group works across research-scale and pilot-scale production systems in Sweden and internationally, with emphasis on translating scientific results into economically viable circular food production models. The successful candidate will be required to travel to present results at conferences and working group meetings.

Qualifications

At a minimum, the candidate must hold a PhD in marine sciences, biotechnology, environmental engineering, agricultural economics, bioengineering, or a closely related field and have three or more years of postdoctoral experience.

Required qualifications:
• Demonstrated experience managing or contributing to applied research in aquaculture, aquaponics, circular food production, or related blue bioeconomy systems
• In-depth knowledge of circular food production from process and economic perspectives, including ability to assess feasibility and scalability of production systems
• Experience with process modelling, techno-economic assessment, or economic evaluation of aquaculture systems
• Strong analytical skills and proficiency with statistical software (e.g. R or equivalent)
• Peer-reviewed publication record in sustainable food production, circular bioeconomy, aquaculture, or aquaponics

Additional desirable qualifications:
• Experience with amplicon-based microbiome analysis or longitudinal microbial monitoring in production systems
• Familiarity with shellfish aquaculture, recirculating aquaculture systems, aquaponics, or controlled-environment crop production
• Experience working with pilot-scale facilities, industry partners, or in international development contexts
• Prior work in projects for Horizon Europe, Formas, or comparable collaborative research programmes.
