Job Description

Location: Stockholm, Sweden or Odense, Denmark

Do you want to be part of a global team digitizing the heavy construction industry and contributing to a more sustainable world?

At Leica Geosystems Technology, we are looking for a Principal Software Engineer - SW Architect to take a leading role in shaping the architecture and technical direction of our on-machine software portfolio. In this position, you will combine your technical expertise with a collaborative approach, working closely with your stakeholders to guide and evolve our solutions across complex embedded systems.

You will work closely with software teams, hardware specialists, and off-machine software architects to ensure scalable, reliable, and maintainable solutions that power next-generation machine control systems.

About the role

You join our On-Machine Software department, where we design and develop machine control software for heavy construction machines used in real-world, demanding environments.

As Principal Software Engineer - SW Architect, you will play a central role in defining and driving the technical direction of our on-machine software portfolio. As a senior member of the Architects Group, you will take architectural ownership of complex embedded software systems and support development teams in translating ideas into solutions.

You will define and drive the long-term architecture vision and technical roadmap while setting direction for implementation decisions across multiple projects and teams.

In this role, you will work closely with development teams and architects from other areas to ensure that solutions are well aligned and scalable for future needs. You will provide hands-on architectural guidance, review key technical deliverables, and help ensure alignment and quality across architectural decisions, supporting teams in applying best practices.

As technical product owner of the on-machine software stack, you will also coordinate software integration across teams and actively contribute to risk management, estimation, and requirements engineering.

Beyond project work, you will represent R&D in relevant technology and management forums, support technology transfer across the wider organization, and help mature existing solutions within the Machine Control division.

You will continuously evaluate emerging technologies, assess their relevance for our products, and lead or propose technological initiatives aligned with the overall technical strategy.

Throughout all of this, you will balance key priorities such as performance, reliability, maintainability, and long-term architectural sustainability. At the same time, you will translate complex technical insight into clear, actionable input for both engineering teams and non-technical stakeholders.

Your profile

You have a relevant tertiary education - a master's degree or equivalent in engineering, surveying, computer science, or a related technical field and several years of experience in a similar position. You have a proactive mindset and have a strong sense of ownership.

We believe you will thrive in this role if you have experience with:
  • Experience across the full lifecycle of embedded software development
  • Strong understanding of software architecture principles, patterns, and best practices
  • Experience defining architecture, designing key components, and driving technical roadmaps
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex topics in a clear and approachable way
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to collaborate across departments and with stakeholders at various levels
  • A collaborative mindset and ability to work across teams

Desired skills:
  • Experience in technical leadership
  • Knowledge of the heavy construction or industrial domain
  • Familiarity with large, distributed software organizations
  • Proven ability to influence technical decisions across teams without formal authority
  • Ability to evaluate and introduce emerging technologies
  • Strong business and product understanding with ability to translate architecture into tangible business value

Language: Fluent English, both written and verbal, is a prerequisite. Additional languages are an advantage.

Travel: Occasional travel may be required, for example to visit other development locations.
