Postdoctor in molecular biology

The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focuses on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment. We are responsible for postgraduate education in the subject area Natural Sciences with a focus on chemistry, biophysics, biology and educational science. In addition, the department hosts educational programs in molecular biology, genomics and systems biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry, as well as prescription education. The department is an international environment with interdisciplinary collaborations in both research and education and contributes strongly to the University of Gothenburg's top ranking in life science. We are located in central premises at Natrium, Medicinareberget, Gothenburg.

The research in Per Sunnerhagen's group concerns RNA biology and proteins as drug targets for parasitic diseases. Most of our work is performed in yeast, and involves molecular biology, protein biochemistry, bioinformatics, and microscopy

Duties

The main tasks include conducting experiments in experimental evolution of transgenic yeast strains with the aim of developing resistance to small molecules targeting a specific protein. Furthermore, genome sequences from these strains will be analysed and critical mutations identified. The relationship between mutations and their phenotypic effects will be analysed through mathematical and computational modelling. Specific candidate mutations will be introduced, and their resistance to small molecules inhibiting the target protein will be tested. Potential interactions between small molecules and target proteins will be simulated in silico. Finally, experimental results will be compiled, analysed, and prepared for publication.

Qualifications

Eligible To be eligible for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher, an applicant must have obtained a doctoral degree, or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met by the time the appointment decision is made. Preference should be given to applicants who obtained their doctoral degree no more than three years prior to the closing date for applications. In exceptional circumstances, the doctoral degree may have been obtained earlier.

Additional requirements:

• Very good oral and written proficiency in academic English.

Meritious; Applicants should have experience with advanced experimental techniques relevant to the position, such as genome analysis and the design of DNA constructs, particularly in yeast. Experience in experimental evolution is also considered meritorious

Employment

The position is fixed-term for 2 years on a full-time basis (100%) with placement at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Gothenburg. Start in September 2026 or as agreed.
