Examensarbete: Running resistance modelling of freight trains
Green Cargo ABSammanfattning
This degree project focuses on modeling the running resistance of freight trains to enhance energy efficiency in light of rising energy costs and new legislation. The project involves analyzing large datasets to estimate the contribution of each vehicle to the total running resistance under various conditions. It is suitable for both Master's and Bachelor's students and can be conducted in Swedish and/or English. The work can be done at the Green Cargo office in Stockholm.Det här erbjuder vi
Opportunity to contribute to energy efficiency improvements in freight transport.Experience working with a leading company in the rail industry.Possibility of future employment with Green Cargo.

Running resistance modelling of freight trains
Background
In light of higher energy costs and new legislation demanding large energy consumers to be more energy efficient, reducing our energy consumption is a priority. An important step is to better understand the running resistance of individual trains and vehicles and its contribution to energy consumption. Combining the energy consumption data recorded by the on-board systems alongside train and track data can help us to model the running resistance for each vehicle in the train as a function of track geometry, vehicle mass, train speed, running dynamics of the vehicle, and other relevant factors. A detailed breakdown of energy consumption and a robust running resistance model can be useful to Green Cargo in several ways; guide in future vehicle acquisition, evaluating the impact on on-going energy-improving initiatives, and helping prioritise future improve energy efficiency efforts.
Problem description, tasks and goals
Use available large datasets to estimate each vehicle contribution to the total running resistance of the train under different operating conditions and circumstances.
