Project description:
Background
Cancer treatment can suppress blood cell production in the bone marrow, increasing the risk of infections and treatment interruptions. Children receiving similar treatment can differ markedly in their susceptibility to side effects. Laboratory methods are therefore needed to better predict individual treatment toxicity.
Aim/objectives
To develop and validate blood-based functional assays for predicting bone marrow toxicity and infection-related complications in children receiving DNA-damaging cancer therapy. The project focuses on neutrophil function and the ability of primary T cells to repair DNA double-strand breaks. In the longer term, these methods may support personalised treatment and follow-up.
Approach
The project is particularly relevant for applicants with a background in Biomedical Laboratory Science. The PhD student will refine, standardise and clinically validate assays in whole blood and primary T cells. The work involves primary cell culture, flow cytometry, chemiluminescence and fluorescence microscopy, as well as establishing sample handling procedures, quality criteria and reference intervals. Blood samples from healthy controls and children treated for leukaemia or sarcoma will be analysed. The project is based at Clinical Chemistry, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, in collaboration with the University of Gothenburg and paediatric oncology. The PhD student will be part of BioLabX, Sweden's national research school in Biomedical Laboratory Science. The project is particularly relevant for applicants with a background in Biomedical Laboratory Science.
Experience in primary cell culture, flow cytometry and evaluation of cellular responses to treatment is an advantage. We seek a candidate with a strong interest in cancer biology and in method development with a focus on quality assurance, robustness and reproducibility. Interviews will be conducted in English
Eligibility
Doctoral education requires general eligibility and, where appropriate, specific eligibility as set out in the general syllabus for the subject.
The general eligibility requirements for doctoral studies are:
Specific entry requirements for this subject, according to the general syllabus, are:

- specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields
- experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology
- scientific analysis and presentation verified through an academic paper, degree project, scientific
journals or the like.
Admission and employment
Once you have been admitted to doctoral studies, you will be employed as a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg.
The provisions for employment as a doctoral student can be found in ordinance SFS 1993:100.
