Your role and responsibilities

In this role as R&D Associate Scientist, you will become part of a dynamic research environment where curiosity, collaboration, and cutting-edge technology meet. At ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden, you'll contribute to high-impact projects that shape the future of Industrial electrification and decarbonization across ABB's global businesses. Your work will contribute directly to ABB's mission to enable a low‑carbon, energy‑efficient industrial sector globally.

As part of this role, you'll report to the R&D Team Manager, actively collaborating on and driving the execution of exciting R&D projects. To thrive in this position, a positive and structured mindset, a solid technical background, and genuine enthusiasm for leveraging our highly advanced simulation and experimental facilities are essential. Your Impact and Responsibilities:

  • Bring ideas to life: Design and build proof-of-concepts and prototypes that demonstrate your research outcomes and their potential for implementation.
  • Co-create solutions: Collaborate with colleagues, customers, university partners, and ABB business units to identify opportunities and develop project concepts that address real world challenges and emerging technology trends.
  • Share your expertise: Contribute to the scientific community through publications, patent applications, and technical reports, establishing yourself as a thought leader in your field.
  • Build connections that matter: Expand your professional network internally and externally, fostering relationships with academic institutions and industry partners that support your growth and career development.

Qualifications for the role

  • MSc. degree (or expected graduation in 2026) in Power, Energy, Chemical Engineering or similar.
  • Background in process system engineering; energy engineering, particularly focusing on energy and process modelling.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and Python. Familiarity with both is beneficial, but skills in one with willingness to learn the other is sufficient.
  • Knowledge in automatic control and optimization is a plus, or strong interest in developing these skills.
  • Experience of techno economic analysis is appreciated.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and exploring industrial electrification for decarbonization - from electrochemistry to thermal heating and cooling
