Your role and responsibilities
Do you want to shape the future of secure industrial products? At ABB, cybersecurity is at the core of our product development, and we are now looking for an experienced R&D Principal Engineer who wants to take a leading role in ensuring that our solutions meet both today's and tomorrow's security requirements.
In this role, you will be a key contributor working closely with our development teams and global cybersecurity organization to integrate security throughout the entire development lifecycle - from architecture and design to implementation and compliance. You will act as the bridge between external requirements, standards, and technical solutions.

Your role and responsibilities

In this role, you will be a key contributor working closely with our development teams and global cybersecurity organization to integrate security throughout the entire development lifecycle - from architecture and design to implementation and compliance. You will act as the bridge between external requirements, standards, and technical solutions.
Your main responsibilities
- Act as an advisor to development teams in cybersecurity, ensuring that security requirements are understood, prioritized, and implemented in product development
- Design and establish security architecture and security controls for new and existing products
- Lead and conduct security assessments such as threat modeling, including mitigation implementation and verification, attack surface analysis, and criticality assessments
- Work with compliance by developing well-founded arguments against standard requirements (particularly IEC 62443), including gap analyses and improvement proposals
- Collaborate closely with software developers, system engineers, and other cybersecurity specialists in agile development teams
- Translate external requirements, standards, and regulatory changes (e.g., Cyber Resilience Act) into concrete technical guidelines
- Contribute to strengthening secure development capabilities through knowledge sharing, workshops, and coaching
Your background
- Several years of experience in product development, preferably as a software or embedded developer with a focus on cybersecurity
- Strong expertise in application security, network security, encryption, secure boot and access management
- Experience in security architecture and working with security in industrial systems or embedded environments
- Good knowledge of relevant standards, especially IEC 62443 (knowledge of NIST, ISO 27001, or the Cyber Resilience Act is considered a merit)
- Programming skills in languages such as C, C++, C#, Python, Rust, or similar
- Experience working closely with development teams and translating complex security requirements into practical solutions
- Excellent communication skills in English.
