Subject area

Migration, medicine, and health

Subject description

The Boundaries Longitudinal Study is a qualitative, critical ethnographic study that longitudinally examines how physicians and medical students experience, relate to, and act upon the ways in which migration control policies enter everyday medicine. Preliminary observations reveal complex tensions between clinical practice, medical-ethical principles, and the law - issues that concern patient safety, professional autonomy, and the ability to provide equitable care. The study employs a combination of methods: critical framing analysis of public documents and debates, participant observation in clinical, educational, and humanitarian settings, and co-constructive interviewing with physicians and medical students. Throughout the project, new experimental and creative methods are also being developed to capture shifting reasoning, actions, and reactions over time. The longitudinal approach renders it possible to follow how perspectives change during the ongoing political process, and how these processes in turn shape medical encounters with undocumented patients. The aim is to generate in-depth theoretical and empirical knowledge about how migration control policies influences physician identity, clinical practice, and medical institutions - and to contribute new insight into the mechanisms that determine undocumented patients' inclusion in, or exclusion from, the public healthcare system. The results will be of significance for global health, healthcare organisation, medical ethics, and policy development, in Sweden and internationally.

Duties

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will primarily conduct data generation through fieldwork and interviews (both digital and on-site), and engage in continuous data analysis as part of the ethnographic process. The position also includes data management and analysis, preparation of materials for publication, and contributing to applications for external research funding. In addition, you will present results, participate in seminars and conferences, co-author manuscripts, and supervise students. Teaching within our course Migration and Health may also be included. You will therefore have the opportunity to develop your skills across a broad array of academic duties.
