Every day, more than 80 000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.

Design and Analysis of a Self Excited Synchronous Motor for a Traction Application

BackgroundAs the railway industry continues to prioritize energy efficiency and sustainability, a Self Excited Synchronous Motor may be a viable alternative to Induction Motors and Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors. By harvesting the energy of the airgap flux harmonics in an Electrically Excited Synchronous Motor (EESM), the traditional exciter arrangement for the rotor field winding can be removed.

Problem description and goalsThe aim of the project is to design a rotor for a EESM with self-excitation and compare the performance of the EESM with that of an Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) in a traction application. The project will involve electromagnetic finite element calculations to determine the behavior of the machine. The project structure will include the following steps:
  1. Determine the suitable dimensions of the EESM-rotor including the winding for harvesting the energy of the airgap flux harmonics
  2. Use electromagnetic finite element calculations to create flux-maps in the dq-plane with the stator currents and the field current as input
  3. Parametrize the flux-maps
  4. Create a function that calculates the stator flux-linkage, the torque and the losses from the currents and the shaft speed
  5. Calculate the optimal stator and field currents for each torque and speed taking the available maximum stator voltage into account
  6. Calculate the currents and the losses over a load cycle
  7. Compare the currents and the losses for a reference permanent magnet motor running the same load cycle
  8. Summarize and analyze the results and compile a report

Prerequisites: Candidates should have a background in electrical engineering, with coursework in electrotechnics and electromagnetic analysis, along with strong analytical skills and familiarity with simulation tools.
