Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a permanent position as Distinguished Professor in Health Engineering. About the Gothenburg Life Science ecosystem

The Gothenburg region offers a uniquely strong and integrated life science environment, where Chalmers, the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, and Sahlgrenska University Hospital form a closely connected ecosystem.

In areas such as precision medicine and data-driven life sciences, this ecosystem combines internationally competitive research with advanced infrastructure, including SciLifeLab, and close collaboration with healthcare and industry. There are well-established strengths in areas such as cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, cancer, infections, and nutrition, supported by extensive joint projects, shared infrastructure, and mobility of researchers and students.

Chalmers is also a core partner in the Health Engineering Alliance, together with the Sahlgrenska Academy, the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Gothenburg, and Sahlgrenska University Hospital-further strengthening the integration of engineering, life sciences, and clinical practice. We are seeking an internationally leading scholar with the ability to shape research directions and build strong, sustainable environments at the interface of engineering and health.

Your responsibilities

As a Distinguished Professor at Chalmers, you are expected to:

• Lead and conduct research of the highest international quality, contributing significantly to the advancement of health engineering.

• Provide strategic academic leadership, including shaping research agendas and fostering strong, sustainable research environments.

• Supervise doctoral students and contribute to the development of postgraduate education.

• Teach and develop courses at undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels, and actively integrate research and education.

• Secure substantial external research funding and lead large-scale national and international research initiatives.

• Establish and strengthen collaborations with academia, healthcare organisations, industry, and other societal actors.

• Contribute to the national and international visibility and reputation of Chalmers within health engineering.

• Engage in academic citizenship through leadership roles, committees, mentoring, and outreach activities.

Distinguished Professors are recognised international leaders who take an active role in shaping Chalmers' long-term academic direction and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across organisational boundaries.

The position is expected to contribute to the development of health engineering across Chalmers, including collaboration with clinical, biomedical, and life science partners.

Qualifications and merits

To be qualified for the position, the applicant must have:

• A doctoral degree and demonstrated academic excellence within a field relevant to health engineering.

• An outstanding scientific track record, evidenced by high-quality publications and significant research contributions of international relevance.

• A strong and sustained international research profile and recognised academic leadership.

• Documented experience of initiating, leading, and developing successful research environments.

• Proven ability to secure substantial external research funding in competitive national and international contexts.

• Demonstrated excellence in teaching and supervision at undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels.

• Strong ability to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries and with partners outside academia.

Additional merits include:

• Experience of leading large-scale research initiatives or centres.

• Contributions to innovation, utilisation, or translation of research into societal or healthcare impact.

• Experience of academic leadership roles, such as programme direction, centre leadership, or strategic advisory roles.

• International recognition, for example through invited talks, awards, editorial assignments, or service in international organisations.

Areas of expertise

Chalmers is seeking a candidate with an internationally leading profile and a demonstrated ability to shape research directions at institutional or field level. We welcome candidates with expertise in health engineering, including areas such as:

• Precision health and data-driven medicine

• Advanced biomedical technologies and systems

• Digital health, AI, and data-driven methods for healthcare

• Systems approaches integrating engineering, biology, and clinical practice
