Om jobbet

Do you want to contribute to groundbreaking research in perception, situation awareness, and decision-support systems? This is an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral position at the Division of Computing Science, Department of Computer Science.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will lead the development of an AI-based recommendation engine for real-time emergency response. The work is part of an interoperable decision-support platform that integrates live sensor data with 3D digital twins of buildings to deliver explainable, actionable guidance to emergency commanders during incidents.

About us

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering, a joint department of Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg, spans the breadth of computing disciplines. Our internationally visible research, strong industry links and diverse environment create a collaborative setting where ideas grow into real impact.

At the Division of Computing Science, we advance secure and trustworthy software and systems, spanning foundations, programming languages, tools and practical methods that help shape dependable digital infrastructures.

About the research project

This project develops a real-time decision-support platform for emergency response. By integrating live sensor data from drones, wearable sensors, and thermal imaging with 3D digital twins of buildings, the system generates a shared operational picture and provides prioritized, explainable recommendations to incident commanders.

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:
  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong background in machine learning and AI, with demonstrated experience in at least one of: computer vision, recommendation systems, decision-support systems, explainable AI, or LLM-based reasoning.
  • Proficiency in Python and modern deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch).
  • Demonstrated interest in designing and implementing AI systems for real-world applications.

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

The following experience will strengthen your application:
  • Experience with LLM-based systems, including retrieval-augmented generation or agentic LLM workflows.
  • Background in real-time systems, digital twins, or 3D spatial data.
  • Experience with explainability and interpretability methods for AI systems.
  • Experience working in applied, interdisciplinary research projects with industry partners.

What you will do
  • Develop and evaluate an AI-based recommendation engine for real-time emergency response, including methods for prioritization, uncertainty handling, and explainable decision support.
  • Design how information from multiple sources should be represented and used to support operational recommendations.
  • Collaborate with project partners to integrate the recommendation engine into a larger decision-support platform.
  • Test and validate the system in realistic emergency response scenarios together with end users and stakeholders.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed venues.
  • Dedicate 20% of your time to departmental duties, primarily teaching.

The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.

Contract terms

The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.

The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.

What we offer
