What you'll get to do

You will own the design of the radioactive waste management systems for SEALER, covering the liquid, gaseous, and solid waste streams generated by the reactor over its life. This includes the systems that process, characterise, condition, package, and store waste, from the cover gas cleanup that handles activation products in the primary loop, to the treatment of contaminated liquids from maintenance operations, to the interfaces with spent fuel and decommissioning.

The lead-cooled fast reactor environment presents distinct waste challenges, solutions here need to combine solid nuclear waste engineering fundamentals with a proper understanding of the lead chemistry environment.

• Define the functional and design requirements for SEALER's radioactive waste management systems, covering liquid, gaseous, and solid waste streams.
• Develop and maintain the design basis for cover gas cleanup, liquid radwaste treatment, and solid waste characterisation, packaging, and storage.
• Lead trade-off studies on waste minimisation at source versus downstream treatment, and quantify the impact on plant footprint, cost, and dose.
• Interface with the Nuclear and Safety and licensing teams on waste categorisation, disposal routes, and regulatory expectations in Europe (i.e. SSM) and in the US (NRC).
• Define the scope of supplier work packages on waste system equipment, evaluate proposals, and steer their execution through qualification.
• Coordinate with the Material and Lead Chemistry teams on activation products and the handling of lead-contaminated components.
• Support decommissioning-oriented design choices during the concept and preliminary design phases.
• Contribute to the waste-related sections of the plant safety case and licensing documentation.

Who you'll get to work with

The Nuclear Waste System Engineer sits in the Fluid Systems Engineering Team within Blykalla, and reports to the Manager of Fluid Systems Engineering. You will collaborate closely with the Nuclear and Safety, Material, Test and Validation, and Quality teams, as well as with external suppliers, research partners, and regulators. We are a diverse team that is passionate about our work and Blykalla.

Who you are

You will be part of a highly skilled team with a can-do attitude. We value personnel chemistry and strive to create a workplace where you enjoy coming to. There are however a few things that we think will help for you to succeed in this role, these are:

• More than 5 years of professional experience in radioactive waste management, ideally in reactor design, waste treatment facility engineering, or spent fuel handling.
• Degree in nuclear, chemical, environmental, or a closely related engineering discipline.
• Working knowledge of the physical and chemical processes involved in liquid radwaste treatment (evaporation, ion exchange, filtration), gaseous waste cleanup (HEPA, adsorbers, delay beds), and solid waste conditioning (cementation, drum packaging).
• Familiarity with nuclear waste categorisation (LLW, ILW, HLW) and disposal routes in at least one national regulatory framework.
• Comfort writing clear technical specifications, reviewing supplier deliverables critically, and managing a multi-vendor technical dialogue from concept through qualification.
• Familiarity with CAD tools and engineering software.
• Fluent in English, spoken and written.
• Fluency in Swedish is a plus.

Meritorious skills:

• Experience with waste systems in Generation IV reactor programmes (LFR, SFR, MSR) or in research reactors with unusual coolants..
• Experience interfacing with SSM (Sweden) or NRC (US) on waste-related submittals.
• Prior work on commissioning or decommissioning of nuclear facilities.
• Familiarity with activation calculations and source term evaluation.
• Experience with nuclear waste transport, interim storage, or final disposal facilities.
