Beskrivning

Millions of amputees worldwide struggle daily with discomfort, pain and limited mobility - caused not by the prosthetic limb, but by the interface(socket). At DeepSense, we're building adaptive prosthetic technology that adjusts socket fit in real time. Our research and direct work with amputees and clinicians confirms the scale of the problem - and that our approach can meaningfully improve daily life.

This is a rare opportunity to build deeply interdisciplinary hardware at the intersection of biomechanics, embedded electronics, rapid prototyping and wearable medical technology. We are looking for a Founding Mechatronics Engineer to take technical ownership of the product as it goes from early prototype to validated, demo-ready hardware.

About us

At DeepSense we are developing a smart rectification pad for above-knee prosthetic sockets. The pad adapts in real time to changes in limb shape, pressure and movement, giving amputees a comfortable, well-fitting socket whether they are resting, walking or running.

More than 25 million people live with lower-limb amputation worldwide. An estimated 35% are dissatisfied with their prosthesis and 40% struggle to walk even 50 metres - almost always due to a poor socket fit. Today's fixed-shape sockets force clinicians into long, costly adjustment cycles and leave patients with discomfort, wounds and limited mobility. We want to change that.

What we have accomplished
  • We have a working concept and early prototypes demonstrating real-time adjustment in a single fully self-contained device.
  • Patent-pending core technology.
  • Over 200 000 SEK in soft funding secured.
  • Supported by one of the world's largest prosthetics companies - our planned clinical partner for the first trial.
  • Also supported by a Swedish partnership organisation for healthcare and life sciences.
  • Validated clinical need through direct work with amputees, prosthetists and clinicians.
  • Part of the KTH Innovation startup community with access to coaches, mentors and investor networks.

The journey ahead

Your first mission will be to build a robust prototype ready for real-world amputee testing by the end of 2026. Once that milestone is reached, we move into clinical trial planning with our partner and raise further investment.

This is the engineering work that defines the company's foundation.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a Founding Mechatronics Engineer to take major technical ownership of the device - designing parts and circuit boards on screen, then building and testing them at the bench. External suppliers handle mechanical production; you focus on making the hardware work.

In this role you will
  • Design and refine the device CAD, including drawings for external suppliers.
  • Design the electronics - schematics, PCB layout and the control board that drives the device.
  • Build, solder and assemble prototypes using 3D printing and external manufacturing.
  • Test against performance targets and produce milestone reports.
  • Collaborate with the team on key technical decisions - user testing and clinical trial planning sit with the wider team at this stage.

We welcome applicants of all backgrounds and beliefs. You don't need to match every item - capability and drive matter more than a perfect CV.

Required:
  • Strong CAD skills, preferably in Fusion 360.
  • PCB design experience using tools such as KiCad or Altium.
  • Hands-on rapid prototyping with 3D printers (FDM and/or SLA).
  • Excellent soldering skills, including SMD work.
  • Basic awareness of common manufacturing processes such as injection moulding and CNC milling - enough to design parts an external supplier can make.
  • Basic understanding of human movement and how body tissue changes shape under load - or strong motivation to learn quickly.
  • BSc or MSc in mechanical, mechatronic, biomedical or electrical engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Self-driven and able to execute independently in a small team.
  • Excellent English; Swedish is a plus.

Bonus points for:
  • Startup, hardware product or medical device experience.
  • Embedded firmware experience (C/C++, microcontrollers, sensor integration).
  • Familiarity with design-for-manufacture (DFM) practices.

What we offer

You join with an initial share grant tied to the current engineering milestones - this is an equity role, so no salary at this stage. Additional shares become available as we reach clinical trials, raise further funding and progress towards CE-marking. The more we achieve together, the larger your stake grows.

As a founding engineer, you will architect the first clinical prototype and define the hardware platform from the ground up. Your engineering decisions will shape the product - and the company - for years to come, with real proximity to the amputees whose lives it changes.

We expect an initial commitment of roughly 1-3 days per week, with the ambition to transition to full-time as the next funding round closes.
