Chalmers University of Technology
Doctoral student in Structural Battery Interphases
Om jobbet
Join us for an exciting Doctoral student journey to advance the understanding of battery interfaces and enable high performance structural batteries that store energy while carrying load.About us
At the department och Mechanical Engineering we unite the power of technology, people, and society to drive the transition toward a sustainable future. Through research, education, and collaboration, we create solutions that connect materials to mobility, ideas to impact - shaping a resilient and sustainable world. In the division of Computational Mechanics and Materials Engineering we foster an inclusive, friendly, and helpful work environment to which we welcome you to contribute. The division integrates computational mechanics and advanced materials technology. It combines multidisciplinary expertise to predict, understand, and elevate the performance of engineering materials and structures. A broad range of research areas, methods, and applications is included.
About the research project
This project focuses on understanding and modelling interfaces in multifunctional composite structures that combine mechanical load-bearing capacity with energy storage. You will study how electrochemical processes, transport, and stress evolution interact at material interfaces, using multiphysics modelling and experiments to predict performance and durability.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
- To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (120 credits) in Applied Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry/Chemical Engineering, or a related field
- Strong background in solid mechanics, lightweight structures, or composite materials
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Experience in finite element modelling (including programming)
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate effectively in a research team
The following experience will strengthen your application:
- Experience with experimental characterisation of materials
- Background in multiphysics modelling
- Programming skills (e.g. Python, MATLAB, or similar)
What you will do
- Pursue doctoral studies within the Graduate School of Solid and Structural Mechanics or Materials Science
- Experimental characterisation of materials and interfaces
- Develop multiphysics models for coupled electro-chemo-mechanical processes in battery interfaces
- Implement models in finite element frameworks and validate them experimentally
- Develop your own scientific ideas and communicate results through publications and presentations
- Contribute to teaching or other departmental duties (up to 20% of working time)
Contract terms
- The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
- The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
- A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
- Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
