The PhD position is located within Department of Computer Science (DIDA) SDS (secure and distributed systems) team, which teaches and researches practical cybersecurity, cybersecurity for distributed systems, AI in cybersecurity, and distributed systems. SDS has participated, or is currently participating in, a number of European and national research projects, such as the Horizon2020 Bonseyes and Bonsapps, Horizon Europe dAIedge, EU-Celtic+ CISSAN, and the nationally funded Cybercampus and HINTS projects.

Work description

The PhD student will be part of the newly established Cybercampus Graduate School (About Cybercampus Graduate School) and will work on a joint PhD project in close cooperation with researchers from Örebro University, who will serve as co-supervisors with their expertise in usable security and AI. The PhD student will work on a PhD project titled: "Distributed Intelligence for Cybersecurity in Industry 5.0 and Critical Infrastructures: From Data Fusion to Intelligence Fusion". The aim of the project is to develop a framework based on collaborative AI concept, e.g., Agentic AI or other collaborative Large Language Models (LLMs), that synthesizes actionable intelligence from distributed, heterogeneous data sources (from both IT and OT environments), enabling more accurate, timely, and resilient cyber threat detection and response for Industry 5.0 and critical infrastructure environments.

The PhD position is part of the Cybercampus Graduate School, Sweden's first national PhD program in cybersecurity, offering 15 positions to strengthen national research and expertise. Cybercampus Sweden connects universities, industry, and public organizations to advance cybersecurity research, education, and innovation. PhD students collaborate within the national research community and participate in joint research, events, workshops, and training.

The PhD student will mainly be based at BTH with research secondments and co-supervision at Örebro University and regular visits to Cybercampus Sweden in Stockholm.

When selecting eligible candidates for the Cybercampus PhD training program, universities should consider the Report "The Swedish Security Service 2024-2025" concerning security-threatening activities against Sweden.

Graduates in the spring of 2026 may also apply.

Eligibility Requirements

To be employed as a Ph.D. student, it is required that the applicant is or will be admitted to postgraduate education. Eligible for admission to postgraduate education is a person who has completed a degree at an advanced level in a technical, mathematical, or scientific field or who has otherwise acquired knowledge to be able to benefit from postgraduate education in the subject.

Meriting competencies and experience

In addition to the requirements described in the work description, eligibility requirements, and assessment criteria for the position, the following degrees, competencies, and experiences are considered meritorious:
  • Strong knowledge in one or more of the following areas: cybersecurity, network security, intrusion detection systems, software security, or critical infrastructure protection (e.g. SmartGrids).
  • Good knowledge in one or more of the following areas: AI and machine learning, natural language processing, large language models (LLM), experience in designing prompts, fine-tuning LLMs, or distributed systems.
  • Good knowledge in one or more of the following programming languages/environments: Python, PyTorch (or similar), and experience with LLM frameworks (e.g., Hugging Face, LangChain) or data analysis tools.
  • Hold a Master of Engineering or Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, cybersecurity, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Show the ability to work independently and in a team, as well as initiate and drive research studies.

Employment level:100%.

Commencement:As soon as possible; upon agreement with the candidate.

Duration:The duration is up to 4 years of full-time research. Initially, the employment covers one year, after which it is renewed for a maximum of two years, provided that the individual study plan is followed. The position may comprise up to 20% of other duties (e.g., teaching), in which case the duration can be extended to a maximum of 5 years.
