Om jobbet

Chalmers University of Technology strives for academic excellence while addressing the challenges and needs of society and industry. We offer a creative and dynamic environment for research, education, innovation, and applied science. We are now looking for a Staff Scientist to join our team and help strengthen our ongoing research.

As a Staff Scientist, you will become part of a professional research environment where your specialist competence contributes to the quality and continuity of ongoing scientific work. You will support research activities with your expertise and work closely with colleagues and research leaders to help maintain and support the development of the research environment.

About the role

If you are enthusiastic about collaborative academic research and eager to contribute to the development of advanced research instruments and methods that enable outstanding scientific work, this position offers an excellent opportunity to thrive. We provide a vibrant international research environment where cutting-edge and conventional steady-state and time-resolved UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques are used to address questions related to, for example, next-generation solar cells, energy harvesting and storage, and RNA-based therapeutics.

The position is based at the Division of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

Your responsibilities

As a Staff Scientist, you are part of an environment comprising several research groups where you will provide advanced scientific, technical, and methodological support to strengthen research activities.

Key responsibilities include:

Supporting research groups with expert knowledge in methods, techniques, and instruments

Developing and implementing scientific methods and instrumentation

Contributing to research infrastructures through technical and methodological service

In approximately 50% of the position, your will take responsibility for steady-state and time-resolved UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy instrumentation, as well as leading the upgrade and customization of such equipment using in-house technical solutions. You will also take responsibility for certain other laboratory equipment at the division and assume overall responsibility for the practical management of the laboratories in which the mentioned equipment is located.

In the remaining part of the position you will serve as an expert resource at the PhD level, providing hands-on support with measurements, data analysis, and experimental design for research groups working with UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. This support is primarily directed towards the Division of Chemistry and Biochemistry but may also extend to other divisions within the department.

The position is neither a faculty position nor a tenure track position, meaning that it does not involve an independent line of research.

Qualifications and merits

To qualify for this position, you should have:

A doctoral degree in a relevant field

Additional relevant competence related to the responsibilities of the role

Proficiency in written and spoken English (Swedish language courses are offered)

We are looking for a candidate with deep expertise in both steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy, including:

Extensive theoretical knowledge of UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy

Strong practical understanding of UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopic instrumentation

Proven ability to repair, operate, maintain, and verify the performance of such equipment

The role requires the ability to interpret and evaluate spectroscopic data and, when needed, to participate scientifically in various research projects. You should also be able to design and build mechanical and basic electronic solutions to expand measurement capabilities.

The following qualifications are considered meritorious:

Peer-reviewed publications in leading journals

Microscopy and fluorescence microscopy (including image analysis)

Knowledge and laboratory skills related to RNA therapeutics

Procurement experience

Ability to communicate in Swedish

As a person, you are expected to be mature, service-minded, and collaborative. You enjoy hands-on experimental work, ranging from advanced research tasks to laboratory maintenance and support. You are comfortable working both independently and in close collaboration with others.
