Your role and responsibilities
Are you driven by pushing the boundaries of robotics, Physical AI, and intelligent autonomous systems? Do you want to see your research come to life in real robots used across the world? At ABB Robotics, you will join a worldclass R&D community shaping the future of intelligent robots through advanced AI, machine learning, and dexterous manipulation.
We are now looking for aSenior Research Scientist in Robotics AIto strengthen our growing Physical AI team. This is a unique opportunity to work hands-on with cutting-edge technologies, end-to-end learning pipelines, and real robotic systems - all within an international research environment where your ideas can make a global impact.
Your responsibilities in the role:
- Conduct research and development of emerging Physical AI technologies with a focus on data driven dexterous mobile manipulation and end-to-end AI models.
- Develop and integrate machine learning solutions into real robotic systems, with experience in one or more of the following:
- Reinforcement learning
- Imitation learning
- Vision language action (VLA) models
- Diffusion models
- End-to-end robot training pipelines
- Work with ML/DL modeling and training for real world robotic applications, including robot control, AI based perception, and vision guided manipulation.
- Apply your research to physical robotic platforms for validation, verification, and hands-on experimentation.
- Document research outcomes through technical reports, invention disclosures, and scientific publications.
- Present and communicate your work to peers, collaborators, and internal/external stakeholders.
- Drive activities toward successful completion while maintaining a forward looking, innovative mindset.
Your background
You bring a strong combination of scientific expertise, hands-on engineering ability, and curiosity for what robots can become next:
- PhD in robotics, control, machine vision, artificial intelligence, or related fields.
- 5+ years of industry experience in advanced robotics or AI development.
- Proven experience deploying AI based technologies into robotic systems.
- Strong programming skills in C++ and Python, and experience with ROS2.
- Experience with ABB's RobotStudio and RAPID is an advantage.
- Familiar with modern software engineering practices such as Git, agile development, and continuous integration.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in an international, interdisciplinary team.
- You will be working in an international environment. It is therefore required that you have good communication skills in the English language.

In this role you will be part of the research team at ABB Robotics in Västerås, Sweden. In our role as ABB Robotics Research, we ensure ABB Robotics' technology competitiveness now and in the future.
In the Robotics research team, we focus on mechatronics concepts, design and robot intelligence in both industrial and service robot segments. Our research activities are usually formulated as technology pre-study and technology development projects. We work closely with the business to ensure our research will bring unique value to ABB Robotics. At the same time, we have close collaboration with the academic world to bridge academia and industrial research. In this team, one of our historical highlights is the creation and development of the dual-arm YuMi robot concept and the mobile YuMi concept.
