Your Role and Responsibilities

This role offers a fantastic opportunity to gain a central part in shaping future architectures of ABB's industrial distributed and networked real-time solutions. The position is based at ABB Corporate Research Center in Västerås, where cutting-edge research meets real industrial impact.

You will belong to a highly motivated, international research team and create next generation industrial distributed and networked real-time systems, while collaborating with researchers, technology and product managers, system architects, and industrial partners. Your Responsibilities:

  • Initiate, lead, and participate in research projects focused on innovative industrial distributed and networked real-time systems.
  • Design, implement, analyze, and evaluate distributed and networked real-time operating systems.
  • Validate ideas and concepts through prototypes and experimental pilots with a clear business relevance.
  • Disseminate results through technical reports, patent applications, and scientific publications.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate research results into deployable and impactful solutions.
  • Build a professional network of internal and external contacts to actively share and acquire new knowledge across the organization.

Qualifications for the role

  • You hold an MSc or PhD degree in, Software Engineering, Distributed real-time systems, Communication Engineering or a related field.
  • Deep knowledge of distributed real-time systems, including theoretical and practical.
  • Real-time operating systems, virtualization, and containerization
  • Knowledge of Ethernet, IP, and real-time extensions (TSN, DetNet) plus time-synchronization protocols.
  • Prototyping expertise in embedded SW/HW systems- Containerized software development.
  • Proficiency in software development (C, C++, Python, MATLAB, RTOS)
  • Experience with hardware platforms (Raspberry Pi, Arduino, microcontrollers) is a plus.

At ABB Corporate Research Center, we explore new technologies and solutions on behalf of our business areas. We work in a department which is dedicated to creating innovative automation solutions to support ABB and our customers. The research team's focus is on industrial networks and communication systems, belonging to the Automation Technology Department.
