About this opportunity:

Are you prepared to tackle the challenge of assessing and improving the sustainability of AI-generated code? This master's thesis centers on GenAI-assisted coding-where Large Language Models (LLMs) support tasks like code completion, generation, refactoring, and optimization-and examines ways to make the produced software more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

With GenAI tools increasingly adopted across software development, it's vital to understand and reduce the environmental impact of generated code for responsible innovation. You will assess the environmental performance of current LLM-driven development tools, identify key stages in the software lifecycle that affect the energy consumption of generated code, and propose or implement optimizations to produce cleaner, greener, and more sustainable outputs.

What you will do:

• Analyse and benchmark GenAI coding tools to evaluate energy efficiency and environmental impact

• Investigate code-generation factors (for example, algorithms, memory management, and language features) that influence runtime and energy usage

• Design and assess strategies to make LLM-assisted code generation more sustainable

• Explore how to incorporate green coding practices into GenAI tools and developer workflows

• Run experiments on cloud environments and container orchestration platforms to measure effects on performance and efficiency

The skills you bring:

• Strong foundation in machine learning; experience with LLMs or GenAI is advantageous

• Solid software development knowledge and proficiency in languages such as Python and Golang

• Familiarity with cloud technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes

• Analytical ability for performance measurement and optimisation

• A strong interest in sustainable software engineering and green AI practices
