Job Title

Master Thesis - Estimating relative camera pose through adaptive geometry matching

Job Description

Category

Computer Science, Computer Vision, 3D Geometry, Machine Learning

Scope

Two students completing a master's thesis, 30 hp each.

Background

Axis Communications offers a wide range of cameras with analytics capabilities. The accuracy of analytics can be improved when complemented with 3D spatial awareness. Achieving spatial awareness requires determining the camera's position and orientation relative to a 3D map of the scene.

Real deployments face temporal drift between the map and reality. Changes in the environment (moved furniture, transient objects, lighting variations) and sensor limitations (measurement noise, spare data) make it challenging to automatically determine the relative camera pose from an outdated reference. This thesis investigates relative camera pose estimation in SE(3) using traditional geometric methods and/or deep learning methods under real-world conditions.

Goal

The primary goal of this thesis is to develop a method for estimating the relative camera pose by matching geometry in a live 2D image against a noisy and stale 3D point cloud. The method must be temporally robust and eliminate or minimize human-in-the-loop interaction. Possible approaches include combining traditional methods (like PnP) with deep learning for semantic segmentation of point clouds or using a full deep learning pipeline.

Who are you?

For this thesis proposal, we target students with a strong interest in computer science, likely enrolled in a master's program focused on computer vision or machine learning.

OK, I am interested! What do I do now?
You are valuable to us - how nice that you are interested in one of our proposals! There are a few things for you to keep in mind when applying.
  • Applications are accepted in both Swedish and English, and you apply via the proposal advert.
