Undergraduate scholarship in vaccine research
Om jobbet
Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research? One position is now open in Professor Karin Loré's group to study mechanisms of action of vaccines. The overall focus of the research group is to investigate immune functions by which different vaccine formulations regulate immunity. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic team at the Department of Medicine, Solna at Karolinska Institutet and study timely questions in close collaboration with the vaccine industry.
Duties
The group's studies focus on the generation of high quality and durable B cell and T cell responses by vaccination. This includes assessments of the early innate immune profile locally and systemically after vaccination as well as the development of antigen-specific responses. The group focuses on high resolution analyses of both early cell activation and gene modulation as well as of the B cell and antibody response such as single cell isolation, sequencing and mapping of antibody specificities. The project will have a special focus on novel malaria vaccines and primarily employ pre-clinical samples from a non-human primate model, covering several standard immunological and molecular techniques.
The position will be based at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. We work in collaboration with academic partners, vaccine companies as well as funding agencies such as the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. Thus, the candidate will have the opportunity to interact with and learn various scientific and technical expertise from leading researchers in the vaccine field.
The candidate is expected to learn and take part in experimental design and experimentation, data interpretation as well as to join research-related activities such as group meetings and to take part in routine work within our research group.
Entry requirements
We are seeking a highly motivated researcher with a strong desire to study principles of immune system functions after vaccination and infection. The candidate applying must have a Bachelor's degree in immunology, microbiology, biomedicine or a related discipline. Some knowledge of vaccine immunology and experience with some of the relevant experimental approaches (e.g. clinical and preclinical animal study sample processing, ELISA, PCRs) is required. Some first experience in malaria vaccine research and bioinformatics analyses in the context of B cell receptor sequencing is considered an advantage. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability and compatibility with lab members. Applicants must have good communication skills in English and ability to collaborate and work productively in a team.
Qualification
The scholarships may be granted only to:
- Persons who have been admitted (and registered in Ladok) to KI to study at the undergraduate or graduate level,
- Persons who are admitted (and registered) to undergraduate or graduate level programs at a university with which KI collaborates.
The scholarships can be granted either for studies in an existing course or for a shorter period of practical research experience (documented in an individual study plan/research plan) for admitted students at the undergraduate or graduate level. The scholarships may be awarded for up to 12 months (divided into a maximum of four courses/periods) during the study period. Decisions on scholarships may be made for a maximum of six months at a time.
The scholarships may not be disbursed to any person who received a salary or remuneration from KI during the two-year period immediately preceding the potential disbursement. This provision may be waived if the income received during the preceding two-year period relates to:
- Income of less than 1,000 SEK per year
- Compensation paid to research subjects
- Compensation paid to student representatives on KI boards/committees
- Compensation for work performed that was of an entirely different nature than education and research
