ABB is a global technology leader in electrification and automation, driving the transformation of industries toward greater efficiency, sustainability, and resilience. Within ABB's Industrial Automation and Process Industries business areas, advanced Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) play a pivotal role in enabling safe, reliable, and optimized operations across complex process environments such as energy, chemicals, and manufacturing. As digitalization accelerates and AI technologies mature, the way operators interact with control systems is entering a new era.

This Master's thesis explores how Generative AI can redefine the design of industrial HMIs-moving from static dashboards to dynamic, adaptive, and context-aware interfaces.

The work aims to investigate how intelligent interface reconfiguration can support operators by adapting to their goals and workload in real time, ultimately improving the user experience. By developing and validating conceptual prototypes, the thesis will contribute insights into how ABB can integrate generative AI into next-generation automation solutions that enhance human-machine collaboration in industrial control environments.

  • Location: Västerås. Possibility for hybrid work

Your role and responsibilities

  • Investigate how generative AI can shape the future of HMIs in industrial process plants, with a focus on adaptive interface configuration and customization.
  • Gather information about relevant domains, and suitable tools enabling adaptive interface generation.
  • Collaborate with domain experts (e.g., operators, engineers, designers) to define realistic user scenarios and operational contexts, and conceptual ideas.
  • The work will involve developing mock-ups or prototypes that showcase dynamic, personalized, and transparent operator experiences, and conducting concept validation with domain experts.
  • Document findings and contribute to the understanding the opportunities and risks with adaptive HMI generation in industrial settings.

Your background

Suitable for students in Interaction Design, UX/HCI, Software Engineering, or Computer Science, with skills such as:

  • Interaction design and prototyping (e.g., Figma) or programming and lightweight prototyping (e.g., web apps, dashboards, simulations)
  • Data visualization and interface/interaction design skills
  • Curiosity to learn about process control and automation (AI knowledge is a plus, not required)
  • Most important: ability to create and test mock-ups or prototypes for human-AI interaction
