Om jobbet

At ABB, we help industries outrun - leaner and cleaner. Here, progress is an expectation - for you, your team, and the world. As a global market leader, we'll give you what you need to make it happen. It won't always be easy, growing takes grit. But at ABB, you'll never run alone. Run what runs the world.

This role sits within ABB's Robotics business, a leading global robotics company. We're entering an exciting new chapter as we've announced the plan for SoftBank Group to acquire ABB Robotics. SoftBank is a globally recognized technology group and investor/operator focused on AI, robotics, and next-generation computing. By joining us now, you'll be part of a pioneering team shaping the future of robotics-working alongside world-class experts in a fast-moving, innovation-driven environment.

This Position reports to:
Production Engineering Manager

Your role and responsibilities

3D printing is increasingly being used for prototyping and small-scale production. Despite the maturity of the technology, print accuracy varies depending on the material, nozzle dimension, settings and the complexity of the geometry. In order to ensure quality and predictability in future prints, a systematic mapping of tolerances and deviations is needed.

Details:

  • Period: April-June
  • Number of credits: 15ECTS/hp
  • Number of students for this thesis work: 2
  • Location: partly on-site

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how different materials and nozzle dimensions affect the dimensional accuracy of printing. The results will provide recommendations for which combinations of materials and nozzles provide the best tolerances for different types of geometries.

The project should result in:

  • A set of test models (cylinders, steps, height references)
  • A systematic measurement of print deviations
  • A comparison between different materials and nozzle dimensions
  • An analysis of variations between identical printouts (repetition accuracy)
  • A report with conclusions and recommendations

Qualifications for the role

  • The student should have a basic understanding of FDM/FFF technology and 3D printing processes
  • Knowledge of simple CAD modelling to create test geometries
  • Ability to perform accurate measurements using calipers or micrometers
  • Basic skills in data processing and statistical analysis are expected
  • Experience with 3D printers is beneficial but not mandatory
  • Be able to plan and execute structured experiments
  • Strong ability to summarize findings and write a clear technical report is required
