Postdoctor in Cancer Research with focus on Extracellular Vesicles
Om jobbet
The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 58 000 students and 6800 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The Institute of Clinical Sciences is one of six Institutes within Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg. We conduct research and education that puts people's health and quality of life in focus. We represent 16 different research areas and are divided into four sections. Through a fruitful collaboration with the healthcare and Sahlgrenska University Hospital, we have developed joint projects and meeting places that benefits both health care and research
The Institute of Clinical Sciences, Department of Surgery, is now seeking a postdoctoral fellow to conduct preclinical research on extracellular vesicles and cancer. The newly established research group led by Rossella Crescitelli conducts translational research in the field of extracellular vesicles (https://www.gu.se/en/research/rossella-crescitelli). The research group is based at the Institute of Clinical Sciences but also belongs to Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research (SCCR), which provides good opportunities for career development and network building. Moreover, the research group has access to Krefting Research Center, an exceptionally well-equipped center for research in the field of extracellular vesicles. More information about ongoing research activities and key research groups within Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research and Krefting Research Centre can be found at https://www.gu.se/en/cancercenter and https://www.gu.se/en/krefting-research.
Subject area
Extracellular vesicles and Cancer Research
Subject area description
The project will elucidate how extracellular vesicles (EVs) mediate communication between cells in the tumor microenvironment. The overall aim of this project is to reveal novel extracellular vesicle-mediated mechanisms of cancer growth and progression. We have recently developed a state-of-the-art method to isolate highly purified EVs directly from tissue (Crescitelli R, Nature Protocols, 2021 https://www.nature.com/articles/s41596-020-00466-1). The postdoctoral fellow will use this novel technology to explore and describe EV-mediated communication within the tumor microenvironment. The group has access to both fresh and frozen tumor samples as well as state-of-the-art equipment for EV research. By isolating EVs derived from tumor tissues, we aim to identify the pathways by which cells in the tumor microenvironment communicate and how this contributes to tumor progression. The knowledge generated from this project will improve our basic understanding of cancer and will provide a platform for developing future therapies and diagnostics.
Duties
The work includes designing, planning, and performing research work aimed at studying the tumor microenvironments using cellular and molecular methods, including cell cultures, different types of protein analyses, and advanced techniques for isolating and characterizing extracellular vesicles. A close collaboration will take place with our clinical laboratory to collect patient samples. The work will mainly be carried out at Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research and Krefting Research Centre.
Eligibility
To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.
In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.
Assessment criteria
To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD in biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, or equivalent is required. Expertise in cell biology (cell culturing on a large scale), biochemistry (Western blotting, SDS-PAGE, 2D-PAGE), and well-documented experience in extracellular vesicle isolation (ultracentrifugation, density gradient, size exclusion chromatography) and characterization (single particle analysis, i.e., ExoView and ZetaView) is required. Experience in extracellular vesicle engineering, mass spectrometry, flow cytometry analysis, tissue embedding, and cryosectioning will be strongly advantageous. Familiarity with mouse models, RNA/DNA extraction, and immunoprecipitation is an added advantage. Experience in advanced microscopy (i.e. confocal and TIRF) and cell transfection is considered a plus. The work takes high demands on self-motivation, independence, and accuracy. Great weight will be given to performance during the interview and personal qualities such as commitment, initiative, and cooperation skills. Ability to communicate in written and spoken English is a must.
Employment
The employment is limited (temporary) for 24 months, 100% of full-time and is placed at the Institute of Clinical Sciences, Department of Surgery. Starting date: as agreed
