About this opportunity:
Ericsson is one of the world's leading providers of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to service providers. We enable the full value of connectivity by creating advanced technologies and services that are easy to use, adapt, and scale, helping our customers succeed in a fully connected world. Within BNEW EUHW RA RST NEP, the Network Simulations team is exploring how AI/ML and Generative AI can transform network simulation design and execution.
Network simulations play a critical role in telecom R&D by enabling the design, validation, and optimization of network performance. Telecom vendors often rely on multiple internal simulators; each built with distinct parameters and operational constraints. Creating and maintaining complex simulation environments is time-consuming, usually requires specialized knowledge, and substantial resources.
Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) now provide an opportunity to automate and simplify this process. By interpreting natural language and generating structured simulation inputs or code, LLMs can help both experts and non-experts define realistic scenarios quickly and intuitively. This thesis will examine how AI driven automation can be applied to simulation tools used in network engineering, thereby improving accessibility, speed, and overall efficiency.
We are seeking a master's thesis student with a solid background in AI/ML and familiarity with LLMs to investigate how large language models combined with AI/ML can automate and simplify complex simulation workflows.
What you will do:
- Investigate the potential of local or fine-tuned LLMs for generating and modifying telecom simulation scenarios.
- Study existing radio simulator workflows to identify areas suitable for automation.
- Design and implement a Proof of Concept (PoC) that converts natural-language descriptions into executable simulation configurations.
- Evaluate the accuracy, usability, and scalability of the proposed solution.
- Summarize findings in a comprehensive thesis report, supported by demonstrations and presentations within Ericsson.
The skills you bring:
- Currently enrolled in a Master's program in Computer Science, AI/ML Engineering, Wireless Communication, or a related field.
- Experienced or studying in AI/ML, with solid knowledge of LLMs (e.g., GPT, Llama, Mistral, etc.).
- Strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Hugging Face).
- Understanding of wireless network fundamentals and simulation principles is an advantage.
- Analytical and self-driven with the ability to work independently and collaborate effectively.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
- Innovative mindset and passion for applying AI to real-world engineering challenges.
